Blood Pressure...

So after a week of monitoring and no alcohol (except Saturday) it's remained around the 145-155 mark.

So I'm starting a 30 day course of Adco-Zetomax which contains 5 mg Lisinopril.

Need to monitor my BP and report back after a month.

Popping the first one tomorrow morning. :(

Don't walk around too much for around an hour after you've taken it.

Your head will start aching and you will feel lightheaded. This is the Lisinopril working.

It will take a few days for your body to adjust, but nothing you can't handle.

I'm going through what I think could well be some kind of intestinal infection/stomach ulcer (have done tests waiting on further results). Blood and urine tested already. Glucose levels fine/cholestrol levels normal/blood count normal/yada yada. So no problems there.

Whatever it is though it's spiking my BP to 155 over 110. And this is from a person with no history of high BP.
The doc put me on Pritor 80 mg. Now normally it's a case of "start low and go slow" but the doc reckoned the BP is dangerously high for that.

Problem now is this dosage is knocking me out. Literally. Verigo/light-headedness/dizzyness/numbness/weakness/you name it.
BP now is not only down, but too far down. Hovering around 95 over 68.

I'll report back when I get the script from the doc for the lower dosage 40 mg Pritor, and hopefully get to the bottom of those BP spikes.

Thanks. This whole thing has been stressing me out. Kinda a relief to start with the meds though.

Will adjust my lifestyle and aim to go off the meds later this year. My housemate did just that and her BP normalised. She lost quite a bit of weight.

All the best, I'm curious as to why he prescribed such a high dosage to begin with.

By the way I'm on 20mg Lisinopril myself.

If you need to get the generic for some reason (my MA was messing around so I just starting it cash) ask your pharmacy for Sinopren. Its 28 bucks for a box of 30.

Need some advice ...

My BP was around the 150's.

I started with 5 mg Lisinopril yesterday morning, I believe this is quite a low dose?

How long before it should have an effect on my BP?

I measured myself as I got out of bed this morning but it's all over the show. Over a 5 minute period:

132/109/72
156/96/68
145/96/82

Then I had a some coffee and a yogurt and a shower and measured again:

146/91/64.

I'm more inclined to believe the last one ...

Question is, when is the best time to measure?

^^
Normally in the mornings when you get out of bed your BP readings should be higher before they start to taper off during the course of the day.

I usually take about 5 readings and get the average out of that.
Make sure to keep your arm at heart height level. It makes for a truer reading.

How long before the meds kick in and you see results?
Well you're on a low dosage so it may need some time before your system adjusts. My dosage was 80 mg. I saw results within three days.

Ok, so the measuring as I get up as not a great idea then. The breakfast/shower routine gives it an hour, so I guess that'll be more accurate.

I follow the instructions that came with the machine: I sit by my desk, feet flat on the ground, upper arm next to my side, lower arm flat on the desk, bottom up.

Ok, three days you say, let me see how it changes by the weekend ...

I usually check my machine with the gp's sphygmomanometer (big word) once per year. I have found that there is less than 5% difference between his readings and mine, if I visit him in the morning. I usually take my bp after breakfast.

@Vernon, if the meds are making you feel dof, get your gp to try something else. I went through 7 different brands before we hit on something that worked for me.

From 80 mg I'm now on the lower 40 mg Pritor.
Feeling a whole lot better but still feeling that 40 mg is still too high for me.
Consistent BP readings now of around 105/75.
Will monitor for the next week or so and then go in again and do whatever tests he wants and see if he agrees to 20 mg.
I'll be a happy camper if we can find the right balance between keeping the BP under control and minimizing any side effects of the medication.

Mine was 110 over 78 last I checked.
Its always been a bit lower and I guess it gives me a bit of growing room as I get older.

125/82 and 72bpm...

Over the December holiday I went a bit wild with Himalayan salts, and my BP spiked, but never went above 145/92...

Now that I stopped using Himalayan salts, my BP seems to have normalized.

FWIW for some people himalayan salt works, for others it doesn't. I seem to be the latter.

Watch out for the dry cough...was the first class of anti hypertensive meds I was placed on...after about a year, I started to do the dry cough thing...whad to placed on some other class of meds....btw, before you go down the road of meds, get some magnesium powder supplement...I got mine from Clicks, try it for a couple of days, and see if it brings down your BP...-after nearly four years , and a rather expensive investigative process , I discovered that my hypertension was largely due to being deficient of magnesium...first time I took the powder supplement my bp came down into the normal range...after two weeks switched over to SlowMag...and have not looked back....Have my yearly check up in June, and hopefully can start getting of all the meds I am on....

I swear by the stuff...-not that I consume loads of salt but all my salt intake comes the pink stuff...

It is weird that some people can gobble the pink stuff, and have nothing happen... but some (like me) can't gobble the white or pink stuff without getting sky-high BP...

Ah well, nothing wrong with just a tiny bit - that I can handle...

It's practically impossible to do a side by side reading
Your BP fluctuates with every heartbeat.
