Blood Pressure...

Asking on a serious note because depending on what his response is he may want to head to an A&E instead of wasting time on a forum.
I get what you mean. Yeah, he'll need to go straight in to a doctor rather than faffing around with Dr Google and forums.

Have edited my post too.

Looks like my weight issues finally caught up to me. Looks like I'm suffering from hypertension but will see what the dr says today.

Does the medical aid cover the bp machines you get at clicks?

I was looking at this.

I have over 25k in my savings pocket, so I want to make use of that. I will get a script from the dr and see what clicks say.

Good find. Haven't seen that cover before but I also havent gone looking for it.
But reading that PDF it seems like your medical savings can pay for it.
Maybe phone them and ask what is required to make use of that home monitoring device benefit.

Depending on the medical aid. Most will classify it as "devices", and as long as it has a NAPPI code, you should be able to claim. Especially if you have a script for it.

I will update the thread about it later. Will see if they cover it.

Yeap there it is. Hypertension diagnosed.

The Dr enrolled me on chronic hypertension while I was there which means it's a PMB and discovery paid for the meds and the upper arm blood pressure monitor out of the chronic benefit. Should you not be enrolled in the chronic benefit the device is covered by the savings account and if you have a plan that doesn't have a saving plan then you won't have cover, but you will if you are enrolled for chronic hypertension and approved. Discovery auto approves chronic hypertension if the application is done by the Dr.

Welcome to the club. This is one thing that can kill you if left unnoticed, but if you monitor it and act accordingly, I promise you, something else will kill you long before hypertension is the issue.

It is actually a GOOD thing you got diagnosed. Use it as an opportunity to resolve it which ever way you prefer and enjoy life!

A journey starts with a single step. Good on confirming that there is a problem and addressing it.

Ostrich syndrome doesn't help.

Good luck on the road forward.

Hypertension killing you isn't the worst case scenario. Being paralysed or disabled from a stroke due to untreated hypertension, where you can't $hit or eat unaided is living hell.

I will take my pills gladly.

Never thought about that. Then again, I am happily managing my condition.

When I was diagnosed, I had no issue with it.
My sister on the other hand, wanted to fight it all the way, until I reminded her to think back on our dad. He managed his hypertension as well. Something completely unrelated eventually caused him to pass away. She only then realised its not a bad thing to be diagnosed.

That said, I am with you, happily managing my condition. I exercise daily, eat healthy, really can't complain that I need to also take 1 pill a day.

I know what you mean. My dad paid the price for not treating it in time. The last stroke left him half paralysed for the last 18 months of his life. He was in great shape until that, had done over 50 ultramarathons, and ate healthy. But sadly, good diet and exercise isn't sufficient for us with hereditary hypertension.

Yup.

Got a lady in our church, she had a stroke from hypertension. She need a walker and/or wheelchair to get around.

I don't want to end up like that. So I'll take my pills and monitor my health.

Felt unwell just before lunch yesterday. Took a reading and was a bit shocked: 160/100. As everyone knows, the diastolic number is way too high, especially for someone with a cardiac history. Went to the pharmacy to get a second opinion, and the readings were still 100+. Subsequent readings later that evening were also around 100. They sent everything to my GP, who rang me this morning, but it’s kind of like when you take your car to the mechanic: did a reading while on the phone with her, and it was an almost perfect 120/82.

Anyway, I had also mailed my cardiologist last night because I’d rather go back on the Bisoprolol and live with bradycardia until I’ve had my second stent than have potentially life-threatening BP. My GP can’t prescribe it because my care is under my cardiologist now, but she said she’d ring his office for me.
