Blu-ray DVD booms

How is this possible, according to the internet and economists, Blu-ray is doomed and is a failure.

Who do i believe now, these guy's or the millions of people that are adopting this new format?

"2008 was a critical year for the Blu-ray format," said analyst Paul Erickson, director of DVD and HD Market Research at DisplaySearch.

"Not only is demand going to steadily increase but the industry's ability to tap into that demand is going to increase as well."

Sounds like a company shill. The man has a vested interest in the results of his research. Plus of course, I'd venture to say he is BSng and that BD is not adopting very well from the numerous other sources on the web.

hmmm... I'm still not likely to buy one this year... or until the price comes down to a more sane level. And all that DRM and encryption is a major turn-off. I don't want some company telling me what I can and cannot do with the content I have legally bought. Sony sucks when it comes to copy-protection.

If the Blu-Ray writers were R500 or less I would probably buy one for back-up purposes.

Exaclty how I feel.

I need to rip most of the new DVDs I buy, because some copy protection prevents my first generation DVD player to play it. How is that for irony?

In order for a format to exist in my frame of reference I need to be able to record on it. Therefor blu-ray in SA is a failure. I can get a BD writer and media (single layer 25GB) for cheap from Hong Kong, but not in SA.

What's a Blu-ray DVD?

I've heard of a Blu-ray disc, and a DVD disc... did they [barry white voice]get it on[/barry white voice]?

And currently every retailer in SA thinks there's a market for a Samsung or Sony Blu-ray player between R3500 to R4000.

Just plain madness.

The real joke is that, sure, the number of titles is growing, but take a moment to read the back of the disc boxes. A lot of the titles don't even make it to 1080P resolution, and clearly state the source material is 1080i.

So much for full high-def.

The web is full of blind tests that show consumers failing to be able to justify the crazy pricing of the hardware players when shown a normal DVD played on a decent, new model upscaling DVD player.

The latest gen upscaling DVD players that use advanced algorithms do a good enough job of enhancing your existing DVD collection.

Until they halve the prices of the players, many many people ain't going to budge.

Just my 10c worth.

current prices of any blue ray system is just too expensive!
i wonder if someone bypassed the drm yet.....

All in good time - remember when the first DVD writers came out. Single speed for R2500 and the blanks were like R20-30

Now they virtually give the writers away.

I couldn't agree more. DRM messes you around just as much if you buy the disk as if you copy it. Why should we finance the American studios?

Well, some manufacturers have started to crack the 200 US$ mark, which is considered by many to be some sort of line at which it will go more mainstream. This year will really show off the benefits of it. People over in the US keep talking about digital distribution, but then someone else points out that their ISP and networks can't handle such massive bandwidth. Much less chance of your Blu-ray having issues than your download getting corrupted or stalled 90% in.

As soon as a decent writer becomes available for a decent price, I will get one for my PC. I love Blu-ray, and think it's going to suprise a lot of people still.

DVD upscaling people always go on about that, but after trying everything possible on my 24" monitor, I have to say that DVD looks like junk now. My PC is far more powerful than any DVD player, but the fact is that the source is just too low res in these days.

Although I don't have a DTS Master Audio Amp, I drool at the thought of hearing Lord of The Rings in that format one day. Will be so much clearer that Dolby Digital or even DTS:ES.

IMO the day that PC games get big enough for Blu-Ray will be the day that it becomes "Mainstream", but as far as I know there are no PC games yet that have gotten past 2 DVD's. Also as HDTV's come down in price, Blu-Ray players will become cheaper.

There's Blu-ray and there's DVD, NOT Blu-ray DVD!

If everyone could PLEASE just do me a favour and inform the people you come in contact with (and complain to article writers / retailers making this mistake), that there is NO such thing as a Blu-ray DVD! They are called Blu-ray drives or Blu-ray discs. It's just as well you talk about Mac PC's or DVD CD's! And so that we're clear, the disc is actually a BD. Now that I got that off my chest... ;)

Amen to that!

Interestingly, my local video store -- a small shop in a suburb in Randburg -- now has at least 100 Blu-ray discs for hire. The format is definitely gaining traction. And the good news is the store charges the same rental as they do for DVDs.

Ages ago. ANYdvd HD.

The latest protection is no longer crackable by AnyDVD HD. They're working
on it but the some of the newest titles from some of the studios don't work,
and Slysoft are stumped by it, at least 2 weeks ago, they were.

With new tech there is also danger of 1080P becoming outdated before BD
can fully take off. Red.com has introduced an affordable 4K camera and
8K and 12K variants will soon be available. Those are IMAX resolutions which
put 1080P to shame. So yeah, watch this space.
