Blu-Ray gains ground

Sony to sell chip facility to Toshiba for $835 mln

As I presumed it was just bussiness as usual!

Anyway back to Topic. I wonder how the new SONY Corp is going to pan out. Will any Key electronics devices like Blu Ray be affected. Who knows about this Welsh Springer chap, does he have any qualms with the current devices on the market or just the management structure, I wonder?

Will this key areas change
As previously reported, Sony has been moving its semiconductor business from vertically integrated operation to a "fab-lite" model. Instead, Sony intends to focus internally on three areas: imagers, game LSIs and SoC LSIs for audio/video devices.

aaah rumour. ;)

If you check the news articles, you'll find that the only confirmed reference to studio bribing was in fact by Toshiba. They paid $150M to Paramount to drop Blu-ray IIRC.

As posted by me, Japanese corporates do not like to engage against each other - it's not in the national psyche to do that, do read that book "Made in Japan". Toshiba and Sony and the two competing products see in the context of that make perfect sense, they would have avoided doing that with foreign pressure but since the Americans were equivocal to both formats (and no-one outside AV fanatics actually cares one way or the other) they probably settled this amicably in the usual way - the way that the giant Matshu-hita does not
impinge on Sony in big TVs (Viera is Plasma, Bravia is LCD), or in the HD camera market with Panasonic going AVC Infra and Sony going XDCAM HD. Panasonic does have the most advanced format atm though - even awarded by Hollywood - AVC Infra 100Mbit but that's for another discussion.

Typically competing products will have different features - and be at different price points - they won't engage each other. There is also an US vs them mentality with Japanese corporates rather ousting foreign markets from domestic markets then competing against each other in the same class.

Source can be seen in your local PC store or online. Go to Take2 and see how many Bluray burners you can find vs DVD-R drives. Look for standalone devices.
The only place where standalone Bluray burners outsold standalone DVD burners is in Japan and there it's probably the same lot of people who've now upgraded. I don't even know anyone over there who has a standalone DVD burner let alone a BR one.

At this point DVD is the dominant format. DVD-Rs retail for peanuts and the BEST ones from Taiyo-Yuden only sell for $2 or so apiece. Contrast this with expensive BD-Rs - even in Japan. I posted a link to a domestic Panasonic store and the BD-Rs were almost as expensive as here.

And I'm the one that doesn't read? "Source" as in "place where the factoid that you've just given can be verified." i.e. You've made a claim, can you back it up with some third party verification.

TB said that Sony paid "at least" $500 Million to win the HD disc battle. I merely asked for a source, and as it turns out it was a rumour. I can't see what that has to do with DVD burners or disks.

But thanks for reinforcing my opinion of your tech posts.

I have no idea if they paid. You are saying you want a source that DVD-R drives are selling better than BD-R drives? Is that what you're asking?

Google it yourself, I'm not your research service, or go to Take2.
arf9999, get off your high horse.

I assumed you meant source that BD-R Writers are selling better than DVD-R writers or opposite. From the way you replied that is a logical conclusion.
However, no you don't read. What I said earlier to you in that other thread is correct, I have never said anime beat Hollywood for example, and I
usually watch dubs not subs and so on and on. You need to stop judging people and respond to the posts instead of throwing hissy fits and ad hominem attacks.

f throwing hissy fits and ad hominem attacks.

Oh my Gawd, he is acusing you too!

consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the source making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. The process of proving or disproving the claim is thereby subverted, and the argumentum ad hominem works to change the subject.

Problem is peter you do not have facts and neither an urgument. Its all based on personal gripes and bad experiences you personally had for buying incompatible media and new technology that is not compatible with your old schit. Thats all. We do not attack the man, we attack the stupid argument of the man! The only "Logical Fallacy" or Ilogicall argument here is in your head.

Whats the problem boy? These relate to searches for DVD-r+drive and Blu Ray drive (links not working?) so what's that got to do with the last post or the main topic. Looks like your personal gripes and arguments are becoming completely obscured or clouded with your train of though so you need to search for something that does not exist. So what or which of any of those links that may show up would strenthen your argument. Please highlight or pic the specific ones so we can debate them. All it shows atm is that you are at least capable of using google and as such maybe find some more friends in Japan than can talk to us and support your case.

It's a reply to this post, and proof that Bluray is still NOT THE DOMINANT
optical format, at least looking at the number of products available:
BD Drives (both recorders and readers only) and DVD Recorders.

:) Show me the ad hominem,'cause if I was trying to insult you, I'd have done a far better job. You're the one on the high horse, unfortunately in this case you're facing the wrong way...

See the sequence of posts below, TB stated something, I replied, he replied to my reply and I replied to his reply. Exchange complete. At no stage did we misunderstand each other. You, on the other hand, seem to have not only got hold of the wrong end of the stick, but it seems that you've got the wrong stick. Which is ironic really, because you were the one that accused me of not reading. Unfortunately this also means that we need to plough through another blog post about recordable media and how some are better than others. Doubtless true, but irrelevant,... and irritating.

Please note that my comment is not about you personally, but about the stuff you write.

..
and still BR is nowhere near a success since it isn't the dominate optical format.... it has to be overwhelmingly the dominant format for it to even start paying back the $400m (minimum) payment Sony made to ensure HD-DVD died.

Oddly enough, I can't find any anymore, but I remember there being alot of them back when HD-DVD did exit the market....

Closest I can come is sony selling off a chip fab that makes chips for the PS3 to a Toshiba/Sony/SCE joint venture for $900m, or a Slashdot "article" http://slashdot.org/articles/08/02/23/139228.shtml

But I think its pretty much widely rumoured/known that Sony paid BIG money to make sure studios adopted BR over HD-DVD

aaah rumour. ;)

I read but I misunderstood. I took TB's statement
"and still BR is nowhere near a success since it isn't the dominate optical format...."

as what you were disputing. I'm sorry I misunderstood, but
It's an easy mistake to make and much different to accusing me of preferring original language horror anime over Hollywood. I distinctly remember I would never say that and secondly I remember that I always put Indie and International Cinema (stuff on www.criterionco.com) above Hollywood.
I may like JPN stuff but I often rip on Sony - which is a Japanese co.
Ok let's leave me out of this but as you can hopefully see it is possible
for a person to assume you meant you wanted a source for "dominate optical format" just as much as a 'bribe from Toshiba'.

And btw you started your gripes against me on the other thread and took them across here :), plus you ripped on me knowing full well that I am arguing against someone with a brick wall mentality on this issue (and breaking the DNFTT rule of sane internet forum conduct.) :)

You feel insulted because I question the validity of your reasoning and insult your weak arguments and socalled "prove" or justifications. Again if the shoe fits ....... ! Your arguments is at best chaotic and make no sense and always come back to the same personal gripes and issues you have against these corporations due to your own personal experiences.

Back to topic Wo! Again, Blu Ray is the ONLY HD optical format remaining, its advantages far outweights any else existing on the mass market and was selected as the dominant media over HD DVD due to the better:

1 Capacity
2 Quality
3 Interactivity
4 Security
5 Future
6 Speed

The HD DVD was not even ready LOL. They just could not compete.

So lets remain on topic. Thanx.

Are you trying to compare volume google hits to prove thebest format? which are illogical unless its based on something? Sales, News, etc. What an strange concept.

Again that have nothing to do with the TOPIC.

The topic is BLU RAY GAINS GROUND. That means the Blu Ray marketis expanding, consumer acceptance is growing, new developments is happening like the soon to be released hybrid DVD/Blu Ray format, Sony relesing both Game and movie on single disk, Interactive advances like BD online etc. Many things are now starting to happen.

Nobody but you came up with the idea that Blu Ray is now the' the dominant optical media. Please lets move forward as the past is gone. HD DVD is history, Toshiba makes Cell chips, Blu Ray is advancing, etc .

Just get back on topic.

My arguments are valid and you have not been able to refute them.
Saying they're rubbish is not refuting them.

BD is not the dominant optical format. DVDs can also store HD, you can encode a fair amount of HD content using H264 AVC Infra encoding, if you knew what you were talking about you'd know that. Dominance is counted by volume of sales. BD is not selling well YET. Dominance has nothing to do with advantages or disadvantages. Betamax was better than VHS technically but VHS won and became more dominant.

1 Capacity
2 Quality
3 Interactivity
4 Security
5 Future
6 Speed

These features do not reflect dominance of a format. At present DVD is the dominant format.

The HD DVD was not even ready LOL. They just could not compete.

Why are you bringing in HD-DVD now. It was ready as evidenced by the dozens of movies sold on it, it was actually better because it did not have Region Coding.

So lets remain on topic. Thanx.

I'm comparing Google Shopping hits to show you that there are 8 times as many DVD-R drives as BD-readers and recorders available right now to prove which format is dominant at present, NOT TECHNICALLY SUPERIOR.

Again that have nothing to do with the TOPIC.

It's a reply to an earlier post.

Great, thanks for the marketing. At least spell things right if you're gonna be astroturfing SONY products.

Nobody but you came up with the idea that Blu Ray is now the' the dominant optical media. Please lets move forward as the past is gone. HD DVD is history, Toshiba makes Cell chips, Blu Ray is advancing, etc .

Of course it's non dominant. Does Incredible Connection even sell any BD drives? NO
Computer Mania - sell ONE LG one, and 6-7 different DVD-R varieties.
How many BD drives vs DVD drives does Take2 sell?
Want to go international? Go to NewEgg or Amazon.com.

You seem to not understand English. Dominant implies the stronger format and reflects the volume of drivers and media sold and in use. Hardly anyone on this forum burns Blurays and virtually everyone here has multiple DVD-R drives, I have 4 for example - 2 laptop and 2 desktop machines.

Just get back on topic.

Dude, this is a free forum and I am on topic. Cut the nonsense.

Blu-ray Sales on the Rise in Japan

Blu-ray Sales on the Rise in Japan

According to a recent report from GfK Marketing Services Japan Ltd (GfK Japan), sales of Blu-ray Disc recorders increased by over 800% last year in Japan. In 2007, only 160,000 Blu-ray Disc recorders were sold in the country, but that number jumped to 1.34 Million units in 2008, representing a huge uptake in adoption of the high definition format.

The overall optical disc market decreased by 1%, but DVD recorders dipped by 26% as the format gives up ground to Blu-ray. Last year, Blu-ray recorders represented 37% of all optical recorder sales (53% of revenue), and that number is expected to grow substantially this year.

No matter what some idiots believe, the prove is in the pudding.

DVD a HD format Pffft! Cannot even hold a decent HD film and sound on one disk.
