I guess if you look at it,it make sense to get a ps3 even if you dont want the frills,cheap BRP and still you get lots extra like a ps3..

It makes sense to get a foreign BD player or PS3 - one from either the US or Japan,
as both of those countries are in REGION A and that's where the majority of new
BD DVD releases will be in. It's also cheaper to import BD's direct from the States/Japan.

At present there's no way to bypass region locks on standalone players although
software products do so on the PC.

well the ps3 drive software can be upgraded where the blue ray players cant so u still better off with the ps3

Firmware on standalone BD players is upgradable.
