I'm sure it did occur to them, and I'm sure they used images of relative resolution on each side of the split.

So although you are not seeing HD, you are seeing HD relative to DVD.

Nope.. :p And if they were doing that and if their images were a true depiction of the difference between DVD and blu-ray, then I must conclude that blu-ray is totally overrated, as I could not tell any difference between the two images whatsoever. seriously. :confused:

AnyDVD has so far managed to make a plan and I am sure they will do with BD+ as well. They remove the region locks.

As much as I like Duncan, this is irresponsible journalism. Blu Ray HAS NOT won the war. Sony are NOT triumphant.

Warner Brother's siding with Blu Ray is a blow to HD DVD, but not a death blow. Many other movie houses are siding with HD and while ignorant South African video stores are piling up on Blu Ray, go anywhere else in the (first) world and you'll find equally quantities of both on shelves.

Blu Ray is a more competent technology, but is not a better standard. HD DVD is the clear choice from a rights and use perspective.

And anyway, before we have a clear winner digital distribution will hopefully become enough of a reality to kill them both - so you don't have a blu ray player in your future, unless you bought a PS3 by accident.
 
It doesn't really matter.

These new formats come at a time that the entire tech landscape is changing. The way we consume media is changing and eventually discs will be irrelevant -- hopefully sooner than later.

As the cost of broadband decreases (no thanks to Telkom), it will become more viable to purchase a movie online rather than purchasing physical media. Simply download a movie to your home server. This will give you the ability to watch your videos on multiple devices and take it with you where ever you go. It's already an available option on the Xbox360, albeit not a viable one for us living with caps.

@ SoulSe: This piece was originally published as a column in the FM. It is my opinion. You're welcome to disagree with the conclusions I have reached but do bear in mind that it was published as an opinion piece, not as a piece of reportage. I'll ask RPM to state clearly on future columns of mine he publishes that they are columns. Also, if you check your facts, you'll see that the vast majority of the major movie production houses are now aligned with Blu-ray. HD DVD may well be the better choice from a rights and use perspective, as you say, but please don't allow that to colour your judgment about the outcome of this "war". Blu-ray is the clear winner.

Not to spoil anyone's delusions ... but is a winner not declared when:
a) one side surrenders / gives up - which in this case, HD-DVD has NOT done.
b) there is empirical evidence that one side COMPLETELY dominates over the other to such an extent that there is no possible course for the underdog to turn the tables ... then it just drags out as long as possible until the dying end.

The recent Warner announcement MAY just be a prelude to b) but it's still far too early to declare who has won and who has lost. Time needs to play it's course and further developments must take place before a decisive outcome is known.

Duncan is correct by stating this article was OPINION. The title doesn't help convey that sentiment though but it's his opinion nonetheless. Likewise, those in the HD-DVD camp are entitled to their opinion. Usually when the war is over, there is no 'winner' ... only the 'survivor'.

In an interview with the Gizmodo website, DongSoo Jun, head of Samsung's digital AV unit, said that while he agrees with those who say that all the major Hollywood studios will eventually adopt Blu-ray exclusively, there will nevertheless remain a market for dual-format players because of the strong foothold Microsoft and Toshiba will continue to hold in the PC market for high-definition recorders. (Microsoft's Xbox 360 also plays HD DVD disks.) Jun said he expects HD DVD to remain the choice for personal hi-def videos and Blu-ray, for professional videos.

Wouldn’t it be great- but I do think that Microsoft will ship Xbox 360’s with Blu Ray drives running on a version of Linux before that happens :D

Interesting prediction. Personally, I predict that Microsoft would sooner release a motion-sensitive controller for the XBox (ala the Wii-mote) before they provide a Blu-Ray drive for the XBox. So far all [EDIT] optical disc [/EDIT] HD content for the XBox has excluded games and XBL caters for movie / tv content overseas so there's very little incentive to switch support for Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. Perhaps, the next version of the XBox might support Blu-Ray but that's still only speculation.

Not to further enflame the situation, Duncan, but I do not see any attack against you by Eltherza - all he said was he didn't like your journalism and he has a poor view on FM's in general. Nothing personal and that was his opinion.

Perhaps you were just being sensitive?

I thought the Mac vs PC wars were entertaining. Seems the Blu-ray vs HD DVD wars threaten to put that age-old feud in the shade. There's a lot of heat in here... :-)

I never understood the Mac vs Pc debate. The BEST system is the one that meets your needs at the price you're happy with. Same as some people prefer BMW's to Mercs. Others like Toyota over Mazda. There's room for everyone :)
