Can’t wait for M8? G-Power’s 8 Series pushes 493kW

G-Power is renowned for its beastly BMW conversions and the German tuner’s latest creation is no exception.

Its new package for the BMW M850i xDrive is not just for those who don’t want to wait for the yet-to-be-revealed M8, but for those who want something that’s (almost certainly) even brawnier than the upcoming flagship.

We don’t know exactly how powerful the M8 will be in the end, BMW only stating that its twin-turbo V8 shared with the M5 will produce “more than” 440kW. The M5, for the record, puts out 441kW in standard guise, with the Competition model pushing 460kW.

But that’s not even close to the numbers G-Power is claiming for its M850i: 493kW and 890Nm, up from the standard car’s 390kW/750Nm, and good enough for a 3.1 second 0-100km/h sprint, according to the tuner, which is a 0.6s improvement.

Pay a little extra and G-Power will also raise the top speed to 320km/h.

The increased outputs come as a result of various hardware and software mods, including a set of stainless steel downpipes and 200-cell sports catalytic converters. These reduce the thermal load and allow the motor to exhale more freely. The tuner also ensures that the engine protection and diagnostic functions are maintained.

The visual mods are subtle, and include gloss black grille treatment and a set of 21-inch Hurricane RR double-spoke forged wheels.

BMW launches limited-run 8 Series M850i xDrive First Edition

First Edition version of 8 Series range-topper gains style upgrades, but no mechanical changes

BMW will offer a limited-run version of its hot M850i xDrive sports GT, featuring a range of exclusive exterior and interior design details.

Limited to 400 examples worldwide, the First Edition version of the top M Performance 8 Series model will be mechanically identical to the regular M850i xDrive. That means it retains the 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo engine, tuned for 523bhp and 553lb ft, which drives through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The First Edition version of the Porsche Panamera rival gains new ‘Frozen Barcelona Blue’ metallic paint, along with a new gloss colour on the kidney grille frame and side window surrounds.

There are also new 20in alloy wheels with a bespoke design, and black tailpipe trims. A carbon roof and exterior package are optional extras.

Inside, the limited-run model is available with special white and blue leather trim, while the leather steering wheel and Alcantara rooflining are both finished in ‘Night Blue’. There is also an individually numbered ‘First Edition’ strip on the dashboard.

The 400 First Edition models will be built at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in China between April and June. Pricing is yet to be confirmed but will command a small premium over the standard M850i xDrive Coupé, which costs £100,045.

BMW M850i ‘First Edition’ revealed! Eight units coming to SA

BMW has taken the wraps off a new limited-production M850i First Edition variant, with just eight units set aside for South Africa. Based on the M850i xDrive coupé, the 8 Series First Edition gains various “BMW Individual” equipment features both inside and out.

A total of 400 examples will be produced at the firm’s Dingolfing plant between April and June 2019, with eight coming to South Africa from the second quarter of 2019. Local pricing for this latest derivative has yet to be released, but we do have pricing for the standard coupé and convertible.

The M850i First Edition is finished in a newly developed paint colour called Frozen Barcelona Blue metallic. The fresh hue is combined with the high-gloss Shadow Line package, which includes black finishes for the kidney grille frame and slats, the air breather applications and the tailpipe trims, in addition to the side window surrounds.

A set of 20-inch M light alloy wheels with a Y-spoke design is also included, finished in Jet Black. An “M Carbon” roof and an “M Carbon” exterior package, meanwhile, are optionally available.

Inside the M850i First Edition, you’ll find full Merino leather trim in Ivory White/Night Blue as well as a leather-covered steering wheel and Alcantara roof liner. Added black trim elements bearing the lettering “First Edition 1/400” are also present, along with a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, plus glass applications for the start/stop button, the iDrive controller, the volume control and the gearshift lever.

The limited-edition model is powered by the same twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 petrol engine as the standard M850i, linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission and sending 390 kW and 750 N.m (the latter between 1 800 and 4 600 r/min) to all four corners. The obligatory zero to 100 km/h dash is completed in a claimed 3,7 seconds, while top speed comes in at 250 km/h.

BMW reveals 'Launch Edition' M850i - Eight coming to SA

The new BMW 8 Series Coupe is getting a launch mascot in the form of the M850i xDrive First Edition, of which only 400 will be built, with eight of them heading to South Africa during the second quarter of this year.

The limited edition is set apart by a number of BMW Individual exterior and interior appointments, the highlight being a new paint finish called Frozen Barcelona Blue metallic, which has never been used on a BMW before.

This hue is combined with the High Gloss Shadow Line package which gives a black finish to the grille, side window surrounds and tailpipe covers. The final garnish is a set of Jet Black 20-inch M alloy wheels with a Y-spoke design.

Inside, the seats are upholstered in a combination of Ivory white and Night Blue, the latter colour also used on the M steering wheel and Alacantara roof liner, while the interior trim strips get a Piano Black finish. The final garnish is commemorative lettering ‘1/400’ on the centre console.

The mechanicals are as per the regular M850i xDrive, with power coming from a new 4.4-litre V8 turbopetrol engine that produces 390kW and 750Nm for a claimed 3.7 second 0-100km/h acceleration run.

Drive goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and a rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system, featuring an electronically controlled differential lock. The M850i also comes with BMW’s Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, as well as Integral Active Steering.

BMW South Africa has not put a price tag on the Launch Edition as yet, but expect to pay a premium over the ‘stock’ M850i xDrive’s price of R1.88 million.

BMW 8 Series coming to SA: We have M850i price

We have the price for the all-new BMW 8 Series, which is due to make landfall in South Africa around March 2019. Check how much this gorgeous coupe will cost.

BMW has officially taken the covers off its new 8 Series; after an all-too-brief appearance in the South African market in 1991, BMW's first class coupe will return to the local market in March 2019. As ever, its looks are head-turning – it's overtly sportier than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe.

The BMW 8 Series has finally been revealed in production form. Focused on performance, luxury and state-of-the-art technology, The G15-generation 8 Series will be manufactured at BMW's Dingolfing factory, which also assembles the 7 Series. BMW SA has confirmed that we'll be getting the new 8 Series in 850i xDrive specification.

As these images demonstrate, the new 8 Series is low-slung and looks both exotic and muscular, yet the newcomer has an elongated sinuousness to it. It's not a small car either, with measuring 4 843 mm in length, 1 902 mm in width, 1 341 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2 822 mm.
