BMW M850i xDrive Coupe (2019) Launch Review
Summing it up
It was a tough task to complete, but the new 850i xDrive successfully hits the sweet spot between grand tourer and sportscar. It munches miles easily, comfortably and in classy style. If you send it through a set of tight bends, the big 8 belies its size; it snakes its way around bends like it believes it's a track-day Lotus. It’s light on its feet and backed by a prodigious V8, which is an absolute beast in a straight line.
It doesn’t really have any rivals either. The S-Class Coupe is the closest match, but it leans more towards consummate cruiser than the dual personality of the 8. The interior, while arguably the absolute best that BMW currently has to offer, could do with a bit more of a wow-factor in its design and appeal, but you’re not going to be left wanting for any tech or connectivity options.
The 850i xDrive is not cheap. At the best part of R2 million you start to get close to prestigious marques in terms of asking price, but right now, this is the best and most stylish BMW money can buy.

DRIVEN: BMW M850i xDrive Convertible Steptronic
Fitted with a rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system as standard, it’s once again credit to the 8 Series’ aforementioned underpinnings, including CFRP (carbon-fibre reinforced plastic) around its centre tunnel, that the open-top 8 displayed no side-effects of its missing roof when it came to fast changes of direction, both flowing and slow-speed, over the course of my twisty Algarve test route. With an M Sport differential, Integral Active (rear-wheel) Steering and an adaptive M suspension included in the package, I’d find it difficult to believe the coupé offers discernibly superior levels of handling prowess compared with the convertible.
It’s the reason, in this rare case, I think my first experience of the modern 8 Series package may well have been in the best derivative to date...

Should I buy one?
Like almost all convertibles, buy one and you’ll sacrifice some practicality – at 350 litres, boot space is 70 litres down on the coupé – while in the case of the M850i also paying roughly £7000 more for the privilege of smelling, as well as watching, the scenery go by.
But in many ways the drop-top 8 Series does have more to recommend it than the coupé, not least because the car’s more benign dynamics better suit the more laid-back cabrio brief. With a continent-crushing range, the diesel could be the star of the range.

Forget the superyacht, get the BMW 8 Convertible instead
VERDICT
If I had more than R2 million bucks to spend on a premium car this month, I’d certainly consider the 8 as top contender for my cash. It would have to be the Convertible too, because, as much as the Coupé will nail it on dynamics, the drop-top actually feels solid and sporty enough to satisfy all needs at this high end of the market.
When you’re selecting your car’s options, ask the dealer about the ceramic and glass Individual options, as well as the plush leathers and interior packages available to ensure you build one that’s truly unique to your tastes, because, why not....
Oh, and after we drove the Convertible at the launch in Portugal, the head of the 8 Series project invited me into the basement of the launch venue where he’d hidden away a very special 8 Series that will be joining the family towards June/July this year, so watch this space.
All 8 Series models come with BMW’s comprehensive five-year maintenance plan, and the car’s already waiting for you to test drive it at local showrooms.

BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: first official image revealed
BMW confirms four-door 8 Series is on the way to rival Porsche Panamera, with reveal due in the coming weeks
BMW will broaden its 8 Series to three bodystyles with a four-door coupe this year, and the brand has released the first official image of it.
The side-on profile shot keeps the bottom section of the car hidden, but we can see it's grown significantly in size to accommodate the extra doors. The shape is still recognisable from the two-door car, though.
The new car takes over the market position previously occupied by the old 6 Series Gran Coupe and is directly aimed at cars such as the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-Benz CLS. It shares its engines and underpinnings with the 8 Series Coupe, but with an extended wheelbase and raised roofline offering more passenger and luggage room.

BMW has dropped a teaser for the forthcoming 8 Series Gran Coupe which is expected to be revealed in June 2019.
We recently sampled the 8 Series Coupe at its local launch in M850i guise and came away impressed with the overall product and of course, its 390 kW/750 Nm 4.4-litre V8 engine. The 8 Series Convertible was also introduced earlier this year and now our attention shifts to the 4-door 8 Series Gran Coupe.
We have seen spy shots of the 8 Series Gran Coupe testing at the Nurburgring but now BMW has released a teaser image and has confirmed that the latest 8 will make its world premiere at the BMW NextGen event to be held in Munich on 25-27 June 2019 before being launched worldwide in September this year.

The new BMW 8 Series Convertible has officially arrived in South Africa, offered exclusively in M850i form.
As we’ve already reported, the M850i Convertible is priced from R2 009 859, which makes the soft-top around R120 000 more expensive than the coupé.
As with the hardtop, various options will be offering, from Laserlight headlamps (R21 900) and an M Carbon exterior package (R51 500) to a night-vision function (R32 000) and a Bowers and Wilkins Diamond surround sound system (R54 500).
For the record, the M850i derivative features a twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 that sends 390 kW and 750 N.m to all four corners, which in this instance allows a claimed 0-100 km/h dash in 3,9 seconds (two-tenths up on the coupé’s time) and a top speed of 250 km/h. An eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission ships standard, as do mixed tyres and adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.

When the BMW 8 Series coupé was revealed back in mid-2018, just two engine options were on the table. Now, however, the Munich-based firm has announced plans to add a third in the form of a straight-six petrol unit.
The new 840i derivative that will go into production in July 2019 will be offered in both coupé and convertible body styles, with its six-cylinder in-line petrol engine offering 250 kW. In Europe, the variant will be offered in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive form.
It’s not yet clear whether BMW Group South Africa has plans to bring the newcomer to local shores.
The 840i joins the M850i, which employs a twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 petrol engine worth 390 kW and 750 N.m, and the 840d, which offers 235 kW and 680 N.m from its 3,0-litre inline-six diesel mill.
