The BMW 8 Series Convertible was globally revealed just last week and now pricing for this model has turned up on BMW SA's website. Here's how much this striking convertible costs.
The BMW 8 Series Convertible will be coming to SA in the first quarter of 2019 and will only be available in M850i xDrive application. It is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 motor which pushes out 390 kW and 750 Nm. This engine pushes out enough grunt to see the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible hit 100 kph in a claimed 3.9 seconds. It is said to consume just 10.6 L/100 km and emit 243 g/km.

The soft-top roof is electrically operated and can open and close in 15 seconds at speeds of up to 50 kph. BMW is offering a wind deflector as standard, with neck warmers available as an option for those customers who wish to experience open-top motoring in cold conditions.

Most convertibles lose their practicality thanks to the roof mechanism, but BMW claims that its new 8 Series Convertible retains a usable amount of storage space thanks to a folding rear seat backrest which folds down in 50:50 fashion. With the roof closed, the storage capacity is rated at 350 litres.

New BMW 8 Series Convertible: SA pricing already out

The new BMW 8 Series Convertible was revealed as recently as the start of November 2018, but the local arm of the Munich-based brand has already published pricing on its website.

Expected to arrive in South Africa late in the first quarter of 2019, only the M850i xDrive derivative will – initially, at least – be offered locally (the 840d xDrive is not destined for SA shores).

So, how much cash are you looking at? Well, BMW SA’s configurator lists a price of R2 009 860. A spot of rudimentary maths shows this makes the soft-top some R122 033 more expensive than the coupé.

For the record, this derivative features a twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 that sends 390 kW and 750 N.m to all four corners, which in this instance allows a claimed 0-100 km/h dash in 3,9 seconds (two-tenths up on the coupé’s time) and a top speed of 250 km/h.

An eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission comes standard, as do mixed tyres and adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.

The four-seater 8 Series Convertible measures 4 843 mm long, 1 902 mm wide and 1 339 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 822 mm, meaning its exterior dimensions closely match those of its hardtop sibling. Convertible-specific measures include additional cross struts, a specifically designed shear panel for the underbody and a rollover protection system.

The electronically operated soft-top will ship standard in black, but will also be available in Anthracite Silver effect as an option. It opens and closes at the touch of a button in 15 seconds, and can be operated at speeds up to 50 km/h. When open, the soft-top stows under a cover with a surface structure and stitching matching that of the instrument panel and interior door trim.

First BMW 8 Series Convertible rolls off the assembly line

BMW says the first series production example of its new 8 Series Convertible has rolled off the assembly line at the Dingolfing plant four months after production of the coupé kicked off at the same facility.

The coupé and convertible versions of the 8 Series are built alongside the 5 Series and 7 Series at the Bavarian factory. The Munich-based automaker says it invested an amount in the “low three-digit million-euro” range in production of the new model family.

The 8 Series Convertible was revealed at the start of November 2018, with BMW South Africa soon thereafter publishing local pricing.

While the Dingolfing will initially build the new topless model in two guises – the M850i xDrive and the 840d xDrive – only the petrol-powered variant will be offered in South Africa at launch in the first quarter of 2019.

The M850i xDrive is powered by a twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 that sends 390 kW and 750 N.m to all four corners, which in this instance allows a claimed 0-100 km/h dash in 3,9 seconds (two-tenths up on the coupé’s time) and a top speed of 250 km/h.

The four-seater uses an electronically operated, multi-layered soft-top that BMW promises delivers “superb acoustic insulation”. A black roof will ship standard, although an Anthracite Silver effect will be offered as an option.

AC Schnitzer BMW 8 Series Coupe Looks Furious

If you are popping into the 2018 Essen Motor show, you will be among the first to see the new AC Schnitzer take on the new BMW 8 Series Coupe.

If you felt like the 8 Series Coupe needed a few extra aero elements, the tuner has answered you in a big way.

All the aerodynamic components have been developed for maximum downforce and balance, and will be manufactured in super-light carbon in later production. On the show car, some of the components are made from fibre glass.

When ready for production, you will be able to spec carbon front spoiler elements, a matching front splitter, carbon side wings, and carbon covers for the vents. At the rear, downforce is provided by the carbon ‘Racing’ wing and the carbon diffuser, while a set of carbon side skirts is also present to connect the front and rear of the car.

You can also fit a suspension spring kit, lowering the 8-Series’ by approximately 20-25 mm at the front and 10-15 mm at the rear.

They are also busy with performance upgrades for both the M850i xDrive and 840d xDrive. The former will now put out 591 hp (440 kW) instead of the standard 523 hp (390 kW) together with an extra 100 Nm of torque, for a peak figure of 850 Nm. Meanwhile, the diesel-powered model will see its output grow from 315 hp (235 kW) and 680 Nm to 374 hp (279 kW) and 780 Nm.

BMW 8 Series 840d 2018 review

Should I buy one?

If you’re in for a big GT, with rakish looks yet decent access and a sensible boot, you’ll find it hard to better this. Especially with a 35mpg diesel engine that’ll let you cruise 600 miles on a tank.

At 4.8 metres long, the 840d takes up as much road as a big saloon, so it’ll never feel truly agile. But there’s the relaxed ride, the luxury aura and the cabin space to compensate.

Then there’s the special experience of sitting well back in the car, behind a long nose and ahead of a short boot. Best of all, it looks like decent value.

Tuner hands BMW M850i xDrive added aero, more power!

While we wait for BMW to announce the launch date of the new M8, German tuner AC Schnitzer has lifted the wraps off its take on the M850i xDrive coupé.

According to the firm, this pre-production model showcases the performance and design direction of the upcoming “8 Series by AC Schnitzer” (as it is officially called) range. This M850i will be the first version to be built, with a convertible variant to follow. A modified version of the 840d, in both hard- and soft-top guise, will follow at a later stage.

The M850i you see here, though, employs a tweaked version of BMW’s 4,4-litre V8. The twinturbo-petrol’s original outputs of 390 kW and 750 N.m of torque have been increased to a whopping 441 kW and 850 N.m. This means this M850i produces figures close to those of the upcoming M8, which BMW earlier in 2018 confirmed would have “more than” 440 kW.

AC Schnitzer’s version of the 840d, meanwhile, has had its 3,0-litre inline-six oil-burner tuned to deliver 279 kW and 780 N.m (up from the standard 235 kW and 680 kW).

A suspension kit, which lowers the 8 Series by up to 25 mm at the front and 15 mm at the rear, is the first step in this sportscar’s aftermarket development, the Aachen-based firm says. AC3 forged alloys and AC1 lightweight wheels will be available in 20- and 21-inch sizes, respectively.

To provide added downforce, “super-light” carbon-fibre aerodynamic components, such as a front splitter and “racing” rear wing, will be available at a later stage. The current model is equipped with fibre-glass components.

BMW’s M850i Night Sky is out of this world, literally

This M850i xDrive Coupe, created by BMW’s Individual customisation team based in Garching near Munich, is out of this world, literally.

The one-off creation is fitted with controls made from meteoric materials, and also features ‘extra-terrestrial’ surface patterns, 3D-printed components and other design themes that aim to bring the beauty of the night sky into the car.

The vehicle was designed to celebrate the intense meteor shower that took place on the evening of January 3 - as well as show off what the ‘Individual’ team is capable of.

Fittingly, various parts of the interior are covered in real meteoric rock, including the door sill inlays, centre console trim plate, gear selector and start/stop button.

Furthermore, the design of many other interior and exterior components were inspired by the distinctive Widmanstätten surface pattern of meteorites, which resembles ice crystals and becomes visible when certain types of iron meteorite are polished or brought into contact with acidic compounds.

These ‘Widmanstätten’ components include the hand-stitched headliner, centre console trims, seat stitching, exterior mirrors and front splitter for the air intakes - the exterior components all individually 3D printed. The good folk at BMW Individual even found the time and patience to mill the geometric pattern into the brake discs.

Other design highlights come in the form of LED-illuminated star constellations on the centre console, tri-colour Merino leather seat trim (in Opal White, Midnight Blue and Silver), and Midnight Blue deep pile carpets.

Setting it apart on the outside is a special, and somewhat fascinating paint finish that starts off as San Marino Blue at the bottom of the car and gradually fades into black further up the car.

The mechanicals are as per the normal M850i xDrive, the heart being a 390kW turbocharged V8 that powers all four wheels.

The car also features aluminium brake callipers with a bionic design. Crafted using 3D printing methods, the callipers are 30 percent lighter than the conventionally produced equivalents.

As mentioned, this car is a one-off, so you can't have one. Unless your name is ET.

G-Power Already Pushing The BMW M850i XDrive To 660 HP (492 KW)

Not too many individuals out there would think the new BMW M850i xDrive is slow but if you simply cannot wait for the M8 to arrive, G-Power have the answer.

The tuning company has revealed they are developing a tweaked version of the M850i xDrive. The sleek Bavarian creation comes with 523 hp (390 kW) and 749 Nm of torque as standard but G-Power are working on a Stage 1 and Stage 2 offering.

BMW Blog reports that the Stage 1 upgrade package will see horsepower soar to 611 hp (455 kW) while torque will jump to 850 Nm. The Stage 2 package will take things to entirely new levels with the headline figures jumping to 660 hp (492 kw) and 890 Nm of torque. That is very likely to be more powerful than the future M8 Competition.

G-Power hasn’t detailed how it will achieve these monumental gains in horsepower and torque, but likely modifications include a new exhaust system, bespoke ECU, and perhaps new turbochargers.

Watched a good review with Tiff doing it and what a beast.They drove the diesel version and it surprised them.
