100% correct, when you build something right the first time and stay with tried and tested things,
you get reliable and trustworthy cars,

when your BMW, and a new model comes out every 20 seconds, what do you care if the convertible on your Big Money Waster BMW sprays you in the face with hydraulic fluid every time it opens.
what do you care if the valve seals give up, and the engine blows up, what do you care if something expensive and pricey needs to be changed?

its a BMW, they Assume you can afford fix it, or you have a Toyota to drive to work when the BMW is in the shop (again)
or you buy a BMW on lease, and what do you care if it costs X to fix, its under motorplan, they will fix it, you'll wait a year, but they'll fix it...

for some people its acceptable, but for the rest of us it just isnt good enough.

We would still be without ABS no drive by wire, carbs instead of fuel injection ( but you have to admit carbs are so much better), you now have actuators performing things that were done mechanically before and to change an actuator is much cheaper in material and time cost over something that would use hydraulics in the past, I mean even steering system have gone electrics it loses the feel of the old hydraulic pump driven steering but there are no maintenance cost now, no fluid top up no seals that need replacing

but there is a marked Difference, if you have bleeding edge technology that will only last X amount of time before it fails, then yes, get a BMW,
if you want something a bit lower tech, but lasts longer, you can stick with your Toyota.

Actually just on that front, BMW are usually not on the bleeding edge of tech, especially across the vast majority of their range.
Merc are usually the ones pushing the new tech and even then only in the S-Class vehicle.

Your much vaunted Toyota will have similar technology to a similar level and age BMW/Merc/Audi etc... and be just as unreliable because of it.

We need the advancement without a doubt otherwise all vehicles would still look like and behave like this :

One of the technologies I'm actually most "excited" about from an engine point of view is the FreeValve stuff. If ICE was still the long term future for vehicles, its the one tech that has the most promise in my mind.

Why do you say that? I wouldn't quite call it dead end. Under developed, sure. A lot of the electrical advances has been driven by Tesla and their success. Hydrogen cars solve the big problem with electricals - charging time. Or is it a case of VHS/Betamax and HD - CD/DVD etc..

Especially in countries like ZA that has long driving distances and unstable power grid, I read something the other day saying that there is a couple of countries that won't be able to supply electricity if all cars went electric. Getting 3 phase for fast charging out to rural areas etc..

Maybe it does a split and trucks become Hydrogen and cars electric or something - to be honest, I'd prefer a split market like this. Maybe I'm just jaded, cause I feel tesla is stupidly overvalued, but that's another discussion.

I could potentially see trucking going Hydrogen yeah.. But I just don't see the normal car market being able to sustain the split technologies, especially if the split is "required" due to some of the smaller markets not being able to sustain an electrical supply.

Using SA as an example, if we can't supply power for all cars to be electric, there is zero chance any of the big boy manufacturers will invest money in a different technology to service this market. We aren't big enough to justify that sort of investment. I would reckon it would need to be around 20% of the total vehicle market as a minimum baseline before the big boys would invest in dual technologies of that nature.

This is exactly where I think it's gonna be at. A truck's gonna have a beeeeeg battery and waiting 2 hours for it to 'fast charge' is simply not practical.

I suspect you are right.

Personally I think hydrogen is superior. But the gigantic ship that is the global vehicle industry has already turned towards battery EVs, and to turn it back again will be very hard to impossible.
