New BMW XM: SA Price Revealed
The new BMW XM, which boasts a lofty peak power output of 480 kW courtesy of the M division’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain, will cost R3.4 million when it arrives in SA.
Earlier this year, BMW finally unveiled the new XM with great fanfare; it is the M division’s second standalone model after the M1 of the late 1970s. Then, in October, South Africans saw the plug-in hybrid performance SUV in the metal when it was exhibited at the 2022 BMW M Fest at Kyalami.
Revealed as part of the M division’s 50th-anniversary celebrations (and preceded by the BMW Concept XM), the new 5-seater high-performance SUV is scheduled to go on sale in Mzansi in the second quarter of 2023. BMW says the Spartanburg-built vehicle will appeal to “new target groups”, though promises it will still deliver a “well-resolved performance experience worthy of the M badge”.

Performance SUVs are here to stay people, there’s no doubt about that. In fact, the segment is only set to get bigger and more competitive in the coming years, quite literally in the case of the ever-so-slightly controversial-looking BMW XM.
Unveiled back in September last year, we’re sure you already have your opinions on the styling, the plug-in hybrid powertrain and the 2,710kg kerbweight.
You may also remember that at the time BMW released a small amount of detail on a more powerful special edition. That was to be known as the XM Label Red, and its 4.4-litre V8 plus electric motor combo was to produce 738bhp and 738lb ft of torque. Yikes.
Now, we don’t have any more detail on the Label Red just yet, but we do now know that it’ll compete in the Exhibition class of this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Good luck to driver Matt Mullins.

738 HP (550 kW) BMW XM Red Label Has Registered For Pikes Peak Hill Climb
The entry list for this year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been released and there is a tasty little surprise in there for the BMW fans.
Yup the Bavarian boys and girls are thinking about taking the range-topping BMW XM Red Label up the famous climb but at the time of writing a final decision has not been made.
“In anticipation of the approaching deadline to register for the 2023 running of Pikes Peak, BMW submitted a preliminary entry. However, a final decision on our participation has not been made at this time,” said BMW of North America.
Should they go ahead with the event, Matt Mullins will drive the Label Red, marking his first Pikes Peak. Mullins currently serves as the chief driving instructor for the BMW Performance Driving School.

BMW unveils the new colours that’ll be available on the XM. Do they... *help*?
BMW says that thanks to increased flexibility in the painting process at its plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the new XM will be available in special BMW Individual colours.
Those colours include Urban Green, Petrol Mica metallic, Anglesey Green metallic and Sepia metallic. Strong names and even better colours, aren’t they? Particularly that gorgeous Anglesey Green.
But then you remember the car that said paint is applied to and all is ruined. BMW says that the XM will be “an exceptional phenomenon on the roads of this world” and describes its appearance as “extrovert”. The latter is quite the understatement.
