Bok emblem up for discussion? (again)

Behind this are some below average Soweto rugby club players and administrators.
 
The point these guys wish to get across with these changing of symbols is that it is not our country anymore. We should stop this bull about us all being South Africans! There is no indication from government that racially based legislatition will end (no deadline), rather it seems as if they wish to permanently institutionalize racism once again.

We will increasingly become the targets of politicians as a means of diverting attention from their inability to govern this country as Mugabe has done in Zim. The emblems, symbols and names is only the beginning.
 
I agree with pitbull, they have tried a few times to get rid of this emblem but they have failed everytime, the logo also belongs to the company that is "the springboks", they are the official employers of the players, it is there logo and they can do as they please with it being a private company and all.

But, on the off chance that it does happen, there must be boycotting of games and the players need to stand up and defend the emblem. Can you imagine being a springbok, who has won the world cup, the pinnacle of achievement, fought for every inch on that field, trained for hours, bled for the emblem, the supporters who have spent millions on supporting their team, spent countless hours screaming and shouting for their team to be the best, all of that would be erased in one foul swoop.

And to all those people who say "It's just an emblem, what you stressing about?" It is more than that, the springbok embodies everything that is great in this country, it is the ultimate representation of everything that is successful. Foreigners look at the springbok and see something that must be respected, something that has history, and a team that is world champions, the best team at playing one of the most physically and mentally demanding sporting codes!

(btw, mods, please step in when people start straying from the actual topic, its pretty frustrating trying to read a thread when it goes completely off topic)
 
I heard about this on news this morning. Pretty sad if it happens.

Why don't these idiots spend more time (and money) on the pathetic performance of our "boys", namely the "soccer" team, instead of trying to stamp their mark on everything?
 
Even in this article they call it an apartheid-era symbol.
Dr Asad Bhorat, of the Soweto Rugby Club, summed up the abhorrence felt against the continued use of the Springbok, by saying it was akin to the German national team wearing a swastika.

Have these fuggers nothing better to do? They should rather focus their attention on our national embarrassment - the soccer team. Typical African mentality.
 
Typical ANC smoke and mirrors tactic, they incite a basically trivial, but emotionally charged debate in order to divert attention from their epic fail as a practical government, with all this talk about integration and unity I still have to see one instance where there was a direct attempt by the ANC government to integrate whites into the new social economic structures that make up the new South Africa, I only get the feeling that they will want to get rid of me as soon as possible. The only attempt ever made was by Mandela in 1995, and used the Bok symbol to represent unity. Perhaps getting the fusk out of Dodge isn’t such a bad idea. Any feedback from the Springbok rugby players themselves?
 
why did I even bother reading the front page article this morning ..... if I was mad yesterday, now I'm fscking steaming :mad: Stupid, stupid government and stupid comments about the Springbok being a swastika, etc .................. Guess I better tell the next Indian/Black/whatever people I hear shouting "Go Bokke" that they are akin to nazis :rolleyes::mad:
 
calling the emblem a "swastika" should be labled as treason! imagine if you did that to the cosatu or anc emblem, there would be riots!
 
Emotions aside, is the springbok a national emblem?
If not, doesn't it make sense for all national teams to wear the national emblem? Afterall that's the aim of wearing symbols - national identity, unity etc.

I'm not a rugby fan but don't consider the springbok sign offensive either. But wouldn't it be more embracing if rugby used the uniform symbol? They can still be called springboks or 'die bokke' same as bafana bafana wears the protea symbol - the national flower. But they are not called the proteas.
If every national team wore their own unique symbols. How would we know that they represent South Africa.

If the springbok was a national symbol during the old regime then why use it still. We have changed the flag, the anthem, what's the big deal with a tiny symbol on the jerseys, huh?

Have you read through the thread yet as this has been answered by numerous forumites with varying levels of passion, but all with the same message. It symbolizes something special and in fact unites us more than some silly fscking flower ever will. You cannot say "emotions aside" as there are emotions attached to the springbok. And you cannot say "emotions aside" and then defend the change based on emotional reasoning...

For those in agreement with the change, can you provide one logical reason for it? How on earth does it unify us as South Africans at all? You are buying into the bullsh1t stories that it will. IT WONT. It will in fact have the opposite affect IMO...
 
If the guavamint feel so strongly about doing this, then add it - I have no issue with that. But don't remove the springbok FFS.

In fact having both the protea AND springbok is a compromise I would be willing to live with and is more symbolically unifying than anything else...

In as much as the rugby unions had 'No to Racism' badges - why not have them carry 'No to Emblem Change' badges.

Opinions that differ from government's are always racist - have you not learnt that by now? People with opposing views should not voice their opinions, otherwise you tarnish the good name of the struggle and their modern day vigilante soldiers, ready to kill for emblem changes...

Not at all. It then becomes a little memento of something that was once great, and can still mean something to a lot of people. Why give up? What is the point? I don;t understand this attitude - if people feel an affinity to the emblem and if it means something to you, regardless of whether you support WP or not, you should stand up against it. What good is it to anyone sitting in a museum gathering dust?
 
You call it romantic, maybe, but who freaking goverment is it ? It's mine. and I do get a small tiny say, and so do you. So if you keep mentioning that people think boers only play rugby and things like that you are not helping the process move forward. What are the advantages to everyone to keep the springbok, make it worth everyones while to embrace it.
