Boldness pays off

After all the hype surrounding the iPhone those that harbour an active dislike for Apple will be pleased to know that the Blackberry Bold is almost upon us. But although the Blackberry Bold has been heralded as an iPhone killer, I can assure you it’s not. There are things the iPhone does well and Blackberry not and places where the iPhone falls down and the Blackberry shines.

Setting up mail account is dead easy and reading incoming mail a pleasure to the eye, thanks mostly to its fantastic screen. However, I found trying to manage my Gmail account from the phone was quite tricky, as it doesn’t give you the option to move to folders, and reading mail on the Bold doesn’t mark the mails as “read” on the server.
Did gmail get folders?
The biggest flaw on previous BlackBerry devices was the web browser. And while it’s vastly improved, it still isn’t up to the high standards set by Nokia and Apple. But at least the 3G connection to the Internet means that pages load much faster.
Pity Vodacom wont let us use opera as part of the inclusive bandwidth package.

I'm due for a new blackberry phone soon - glad to see the choices continue to improve.

Not sure when Ben wrote this, but the Bold is available from Vodacom (and MTN, I believe).

I don't think the Bold was ever designed to be a direct competitor to the iPhone, rather it's the next logical step for the traditional BB format.

The Blackberry Storm however, does seem to want to take the iPhone on, on its own turf with a full glass-top touchscreen, but with tactile feedback.

I use Opera Mini on the device, surely that is on device browsing?

I have been using Opera Mini for at least 3 months now on my BB 8310 and never pay 1cent for surfing.

I'd love to know how - I've been trying for months to get it to work. :)

hmm.. I'm a hardcore Nokia boy, but really wont mind giving this blackberry a shot, will consider it seriously as my next upgrade..how much does to push service cost if u do it prepaid (can one get it prepaid?)

Cant do it prepaid I'm afraid. The uncapped service is r69 pm on Vodacom.

I think this writers lost the plot completely.
It seems every journalist is an expert these days, and just the mention of "iphone killer" seems to get attention.

The bold is not a competitor to the iphone never was and never will be, infact most people are dropping Blackberry, the package and the phones for Apple.

Im not a fan of the Bold, I was and still am a fan of the 8310, a 8310 with Bold style covers, the Bold UI and 3G will sell better than the Bold imo.

if anyone does momentarily drop the BB for an iPhone, it will only be temporary. Bottom line is, the iPhone sux, even the staff at Cellucity thinks so....thats saying something

Long live the Blackberry!!!

I bet if you offer the their staff an iPhone or a BB with R800.00 they would all go for the iPhone.

But that's exactly what the article was about...

...as is the case with every phone. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. I am sure there are things that my two year old Nokia N80 does better than the iPhone. And there will be strengths and weaknesses to the new Google phones as well. I know they will also have their shortcomings.

Despite living in the latter end of the first decade of the twenty-first century, we are nowhere near the PERFECT phone, mobile device, pda, etc. So at this stage it is all still about choice and personal preference.

I am sure there are things about the iPhone I could grow to love... it's only the fanboys that I love to pick on and hate on! :p

@Bwana... gmail does not have folders, I think he was talking about downloading the e-mail via POP3 and then putting it into the e-mail client's folders.

That semi sucks ass
It might - I used to just use the 4u contract and add the blackberry onto that so as long as I didnt make calls the monthly bill was only r69 :D

I'm a converted man. I hated my dads Pearl, and sort of ignored his Curve, but I've had my bold for 2days now - and I'm STOKED. Also looks like surfing on opera is 'free' as well on the 'unlimited internet' facility. I'm using it with my gmail at the mo... Is there a way to 'supress' the sent items from coming back to the device? Perhaps a a setting on GMAIL or on the device that I have missed?
Will be switching on my work mail account shortly too :)
