Bottleneck?

Hi guys,

I am disturbed by my low 3DMark 06 score. I have seen results on PCs with the same specs as mine, but MUCH better results.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
2GB 667 DDR2 RAM
Inno3D GeForce 9600GT 512MB DDR3

3DMark scores are as follow:

SM2.0: 3381
SM3.0: 3096
CPU: 1564

This is extremely poor in comparison to other reviews and reports, where the SM scores were between 4000 and 5000. What can be done to find this bottleneck? Is there a BIOS setting that's limiting performance?

There are people out there with the same CPU, but score well above what I did in 3DMark tests. Am I missing something here? Maybe drivers, bios updates, etc?

You would only expect that from AMD (hehe, flamebaiting)

can any of you people read? HE KNOWS A C2D will pwn his X2 but wants to know WHY other X2's perform better.

They are probably overclocked, checked the net and his scores seem pretty consistent with other non oc'ed systems.

If he has oc'ed then there is another hassle

Also check your drivers, make sure they are all up to date... I usually out-perform PCs with similar specs because of this.

Yeah well, I tried overclocking the CPU but all I got was a reboot every time I hit the boot screen. My mobo doesn't allow me to OC the PC even to 2.2Ghz. I don't think the cpu is getting enough power.....

Sucks really, waited patiently for my graphics card and now I have to upgrade my CPU as well...

Try using clockgen to overclock, it works well with my motherboard and Athlon64.

Edit: That inno3d card is cheap btw(I'm getting one too) could it not be a bottleneck hence the price?

dude, it's simple, Overclock your CPU to about 4000 X2 speeds or even 4200 X2 speeds and you will see the GPU and CPU scores go up. thats how simple it is :p

Not that simple if my motherboard doesn't allow it. ;) I've tried using Clockgen as well now, and my FSB keeps staying the same, no matter what I do. When entering the BIOS and setting the FSB manually, I get a reboot when it hits the splash screen.

Inside Clockgen, the values are set to 2400mhz, but it still clocks at 2000mhz.

Asus M2NPV-MX. Apparently people have clocked this CPU to 2.6Ghz with the same Mobo, no problems. Something is not right here.

Have you set the correct PLL?
Edit:
It's a shame that the clockgen official site does not have the instructions now as before, I wonder when they'll be up again.

It was set to auto, and I had no options to change the PLL. It looked right though.

No, I had to set my PLL manually to get it to work.

Your pll options are under "pll setup" click that button then select the ICS for your motherboard(google it if you are not sure) then read clocks and apply.

That's how it worked for me.

And very importantly! increase the overclock gently or you'll fry your PC.

Edit:
I have a cheap MSI motherboard that does not allow bios over-clocking so if Clockgen works for me it should work for you I hope.
