Hi, if anyone can assist with the below situation I'd really appreciate it!

We bought a car, and the only documents we got were the vehicles registration document. The seller of car is not the original owner but we do have contact with the original owner.

The car is not stolen, but was sold multiple times without the papers, according to the original owner. The lisence disk is also behind.

The original owner does not want to give the papers because the person he sold the car too owes him money.

We would like to know how do we get the car on our name and sort out the lisence disk etc without dealing with the original owner? We have already tried simply asking for the papers but he does not want to do that until he gets his money from one of the previous buyers (who we don't know and have no contact info of)

We have messages between both the original owner and the person who sold the car to us explaining this whole situation (after the sale was made)

We are based in Port Elizabeth/ Gqeberha

Please help!

Get someone who looks like the original owner and get some enormous speeding fines.

Completely baffled that people still do this in the day and age we live in...if the car that you intend to buy is not registered in the person's name who you hand the money over to, you walk away, as simple as that.

What is the problem? No fines and no registration fees and hassles. I wish I bought my car like that. When I sell my car it will only have the service history.
No fines? Yes!
No registration fees? Yes!
Hassles - Not really, except for scanning for, and avoiding, roadblocks everywhere you drive

Yes, there was a roadblock on the N2 and I just went around on the offramp and turned out much faster than being stuck in the roadblock. Even if they do stop me, I just called that number and made sure there is no admin mark against me. So they will fine if they catch me but I won`t pay that fine and I will not renew any licenses, it is now too expensive with all the penalties and arrears.

They will impound the vehicle.

What to do (friend who runs a panel beater works says he has done this 3 times)

Get SAPS clearance
Obtain a roadworthy certificate
Proof of payment from the last seller
Prepare an affidavit saying the papers are lost and get it stamped at the SAPS
Pay for a duplicate reg document
Apply for a change of ownership

In Cape Town, he has done this at the Plumstead municipal office succesfully
