Watched a SA cooking show on tv the other day where the contestants had to come up with designer braaibroodjies.
Been keen to do this myself ever since and now planning to do it this coming weekend.

Thus far I have thought of the following combinations:
Cheese, tomato and Onions with some garlic on it
Smoked cheese and smoked bacon
Smoked cheese, caramelised onions, red peppers & biltong dust
Cheddar for the punch, Gouda for the creamyness and mozarella for that stickyness
Blue cheese, mozarella and fig jam.

Your thoughts and suggestions?

My usual:

- Cheese, Tomato, Red/Green Peppers and Biltong
- Banana (and Bacon)
- Cheese and Apricot Jam <- best served with Fish

You can also make your recipe between two thin Dough "pizza" Bases <- read on recipes as it will also need to go in the Fridge prior on the Coals.

I am really keen to pair the fine biltong with cheese. Cant wait.

When you add ingredients like chicken or bacon, remember that it must be cooked.

Biltong on the other hand is quite a sensation when added, never try to kill the combination by overpowering one taste.

-3 cheese(1 being feta) goes well, with some finely diced chilli in it.
- Cheese and tomato and onion is always a crowd pleaser
- Cheese, onion and cream style sweetcorn
- grilled eggplant, a bit of blue cheese , grilled slices of tomato and a balsamic gastrique drizzle

Best served with everything!

Pretty much the gold standard when it comes to braaibroodjies. Just dont forget the Mrs. Balls

hahaha agreed.

im will have to try this cheese and apricot jam version sounds interesting.

Finely chopped fresh garlic, a few leaves basil on top of your std onion cheese & tomato. I place a domed pot lid over the broodjies on the grill with very few coals underneath. This ensures that the insides are cooked properly and the bread is not burnt but nice and crispy

Such a simple thing to enjoy, so don't come here with all your fancy stuffs:

Kaas + Tamatie + Uie + Knoffel en iets wat brand. Finish en klaar. Nikse se ge-bacon en blue cheese nonsens nie.

I married my wife because she can make awesome broodtjies:Cheese, tomato, onion and Mrs Balls with salt n pepper.

Not an original recipe but she just gets it right somehow. And people should stop screwing around with winning original food, next you lot are going to say you do it in your man-ovens.

The original cheese, tomato and onion is still the best. Chutney and the likes make it soggy. It needs that crunch.

Do you just use two slices of bread?

I know they have those toasty things in packets but they hardly put any filling in them.

We always buy the plain ones and stuff them with cheese. We use to eat them a lot but no longer. I find them hard to braai and they don't taste so lekka once they get cold.

Nothing beats a lekka' braa broodtjie the next morning.
