Eskom CEO Brian Molefe is stepping down as CEO with effect from 1 January 2017.

Khulu Phasiwe, a spokesman for the state-owned electricity utility, said in a series of messages posted on Twitter that Molefe is stepping down of his own volition.

“Mr Molefe says he’ll take time off to reflect before deciding on his next career move,” Phasiwe said. “[He] says stepping down was not an act of admission of wrongdoing on his part.”

His decision to step down follows in the wake of the publication by the public protector of a report into state capture, which included incriminating details about Molefe’s relationship with the controversial Gupta family.

In a statement, Molefe said he was quitting in the interests of “good corporate governance”.

“I do so voluntarily: indeed, I wish to pay tribute to the unfailing support I have had since I took up office from the chairman, the board and with those with whom it has been my privilege to work. Together we brought Eskom back from the brink.”

The report showed that Molefe and the eldest of the Gupta brothers, Ajay Gupta, made 58 telephone calls to each other in an eight0month period ending in March 2016

Ja, not due to the fact that you were about to be hauled before a court of law and thrown in jail.. Not at all Brian crybaby Molefe

It shows he foresees big poof and thinks it'll help his defense. In the anc eyes resigning then all is forgiven but hopefully in the eyes of the law he will face the courts and due justice.

South Africans need to understand the “rot” at Eskom goes much deeper. “The whole board needs to be replaced and there are many others who are also implicated in the report.”

He expects “someone similar” to Molefe to be appointed to head up the power utility.

“I do not see this as a positive,” Montalto said. “They will appoint someone equally as willing to facilitate rent extraction and ensure nuclear success and as long as the board and other senior management are in place nothing changes. If the CFO is for example appointed as CEO that is not positive and it would be a sign of the status quo.”

Now where did I misplace my surprise face?
