I am heading back to SA in the near future and would like to know what the service is like in SA for non-Windoze users.

I am using Orange broadband and Ubuntu 7.10 on my desktop and 8.04 on my laptop. My laptop is on a wireless connection to my router and my desktop is using a network connection.

I had trouble setting up the wireless connections due to ubuntu 6.10 not recognising my adapter. That was sorted with a driver and also with 7.10.

But, I'll have to give back my router and wireless connector as it is the property of Orange.

What I really want to know is what options are there in SA for running a simmilar system. I know Vadaphone (vodacom) connects with a connector but the wireless connector only work on M$ Windoze - or so it seems.

Maybe some other Linux users can shed more light on the matter!

Thank, in anticipation!

You should have no problems with a similar setup! You might pay slightly more, but the setup will be almost identical.

If you have any probs, you should get excellent support here on this forum as well! ;)

Thank you for the prompt reply!

Who do you guys recommend using?

Telkom?
Vodacom or MTN or any other ISP?

I left SA in 2001 and have no knowledge of the service in SA or the providers. I try to read about them on this excellent forum and elsewhere but is it still clear as mud.

Thanks again!

It would depend on your location. Ideally you would want ADSL (you dont have to use Telkom.. I would apply through www.webafrica.co.za ), but if you cant get ADSL or do not want to wait then get Vodacom HSDPA.

Dont touch Iburst with Mugabes Internet connection.

Yes, sorry, should have said that. It depends on your location. Vodacom do have the best 3G (HSDPA) coverage, with MTN a close second. ADSL is available in the major metropolitan areas, Neotel, the second national operator is also catching up fast. iburst (wireless) is a last resort. Wimax is also slowly starting to take off. Support for linux on HSDPA and ADSL is good.

Brilliant!

I am sure I'll hasle you guys in future to get the setup sorted!

All the best,

I am using a app called UMTSmon to run my Dell 5510 (XU870) card on ubuntu without any problems.

I have a Vodaphone app that I use in Linux. I dont have the source code though- only the binary (.deb)

works like a charm in Ubuntu....

Like w1z4rd said - stay away from iburst no matter what they'll tell you, or how good it sounds, once their account department get hold of your banking details, it'll be a nightmare to get rid of them.

Might also be worth a shot but if the Vodacom app only works in Windows you could also try to get it to work with WINE in Linux. I don't see why it shouldn't work :) but then you neva know until you tried :p
