Broadband around the world: How does SA compare?

oh man.. i need to move :/ darn broadband in the UK is as cheap as a dial up account here(excl telkom per minute bill) :eek:
 
Nice - in a depressing BOAGYA sort of way. Unfortunately they're the cheapest option available to me - cellular being prices well out of my budget and wireless unavailable at this time.

just puts the whole DSL broadband thingy into perspective.We'll be getting an internet account soon for home as i can't bear it any longer,without.

Maybe the threat from municipal networks, WiMax and HSDPA will be enough to kick Telkom into action into rolling out real broadband in the DSL arena. If not they may just find themselves playing second fiddle to Vodacom, MTN and even some municipalities in the broadband sphere.

How? When telkom control all the pipes in and out of the country?
 
scarry thing is... it's cheaper to make international calls to the usa then a local call in South-africa last time i made a call to the usa wanted to order somthing i was about 30 min on the line and the phone bill showed not even more then R17 for a whole 30min...

guess where thats going to

It does!!

I don't care about the world leaders MTN and VodaCom are made into. Sure their HSDPA is lank fast but the idea around it is that it offers mobile users the oppertunity to stay connected.

It's appaling that HSDPA is even compared AND offered as a alternative to fixed line broadband in SA as it's not even suppose to be in the same league!

Telkom should be disgracefully ashamed that they even dare to compare their prices against HSDPA and other wireless offerings when ADSL is supposed to be far superior in price AND speed AND data capping.
 
Same old same old. These sorts of comparisons have been going on for ages and still we get shafted. What do they care, they have us by the balls..

While the focus on speed is great and everything, having Telkom eventually furnish us with a 4Mbps connection when most people can hardly afford the 384kbps connection seems about as useful as an ashtray on a bicycle. I don't care about faster when I won't be able to afford it. I mean, who honestly gives a damn? It's like saying that BMW will soon be importing the fastest production car in existence and all I can actually afford to drive is my 1989 Toyota Corolla...

Exactly! darn i still think, force dial up to a free excl isp cost and the rest will have to fix up cost else they price themselves out of the market.
 
i've been trying to find a add where telkom actually says 4mbps is coming soon, anybody know of a telkom site that says that? is their idea of soon not maby 2 years from now?

Glossed over is that Telkom also makes a fortune from selling traffic at outrageous prices.

Why does it feel like no-one is listening? Telkom's cripping the internet economy - everyone knows it - but is anyone doing anything about it? Why does it feel like we're outraged with no end in sight?

it would be great if we could have that French Connection here ("2.5 Gbps downstream, 1.2 Gbps upstream service!"). We could spend all our life savings in one day. Wouldn't that feel great!!!!
 
i think SA banks should start a taylor made Bond service for internet subscribers so that everyone can have internet (and millions of rands worth of debpt), then we could all have a "2.5 Gbps downstream, 1.2 Gbps upstream service!"
 
Please don't write articles like this one......I just get so depressed then outright angry that I can't even tolerate anything government anymore. The people we elected do nothing to help us, but are content to shaft us. I would prefer not to know these facts and just be happy that I have a 384 line for R25.00 less than my old 192.
