Broadband getting faster, cheaper

I really think some of you need to get a little perspective...

You cannot be comparing our internet offerings with those of users in the US and EU when those people are connecting to servers that are just down the road from them. We are in Africa and most of you are not terribly interested in much of the content that is hosted here.

I invite you to do a little traveling in the rest of Africa and compare the Internet access that we are privileged to with the 'broadband' that the rest of the continent uses. We have at least 4 wireless Internet Access options covering large portions of the country to compete against relatively fast wired access from the beloved Telkom. There are capital cities on the rest of the continent where you cannot even get gprs or reliable dial-up.

Quote for the day: "Get a Clue..."

While the Neotel offering has some shortcomings, I think we should not lose focus on the bigger picture: It offers a sub-R 1000.00 uncapped offering and undercut current prices by around 50%.

Okay RPM, let us look at a more realistic product. (this is SA, not USA - R1000pm )

Neotel:
5GB
1000 Free On-Net Voice Minutes
R499

My Telkom account for last month:
6GB
No contract
R527

undercut current prices by around 50%

R499/R527 = a saving of 5%

I know. :o You have to have an ADSL modem, but what I am trying to say is that it's not such a big deference as what you make it out to be.

I know one can blindly ask for an uncapped 8 Mbps service for R 200.00.

I don't think anybody expects that. We just want decent caps, like 384k/20GB at R500.

but this is simply not feasible with current international bandwidth prices

I hope that, when we get Seacom, Neotel will drop their bandwidth prices. We'll just have to wait and see. We are experts at waiting. :D

Thats really not such a bad price for a business setup....

That would be excellent for a business product. I agree. It's just, their website says consumer product.

Also WTF how do you expect Neotel to just start off with: "here is an uncapped account for R10 a month"????

I don't recall saying that.

So why not look at the 10GB option for R599? That will kill your comparison.

Neotel have done pretty well with getting cheap bandwidth out of SAT-3. Unfortunately they only expect 60 000 (optimistic anyway) customers by the end of the year and have fibre, WiMax and CDMA networks to finance mostly from these packages.

Well, if they don't come to Cape Town soon, then I unfortunately won't be 1 of the 60 000. :-(

This is exactly what one would have liked to see from Neotel…setting new standards regarding pricing and usage limits.
I think it's great that Neotel undercuts current prices - I really wanted to switch but I was simply stunned that ethernet has been completely ignored, especially since it's the de facto standard.

Has Neotel actually given an official response as to why ethernet is not an option on their device? Surely it will be to their benefit knowing thousands more will sign up if these users can add their LANs to the Neotel device.

Significantly short sighted by Neotel:(.
