Hi all. Please excuse if this question is noob as I am new to myadsl and don't know if this has been discussed at all.

I just want to know if Broadband over power lines will exist in this country anytime soon or if this was just some kind of hoax. I am referring to www.goal.co.za and although I have seen this a long time ago, I am still waiting to see if their vans will be driving up our street anytime soon??? lol. Its been months and months later

It would definately be a worthy alternative to ADSL and easier to set up. I expect alot of criticism if this was a hoax and I missed out ?? hehe :D

international bandwidth

Hey thanks Saintm much appreciated.

Well as far as im concerned it's quite an interesting topic and I would like to know more about it. However I keep hearing talk about an intranet and connecting communities, is this more of a local scheme rather than providing access to the worldwide web??

Although they do mention SAIX and UUNET I would think I just misunderstood these comments. But this tells me it still wont fix our latency problems over international bandwidth :/

The day I get to shoot someone in Europe over Unreal or Quake without so much delay seems far away :(

There'll never be fantastic pings to the EU I'm afraid. Unshaped ADSL is about as good as it's going to get at around 200ms-250ms.

Networking over powerlines !!
"...Because it uses conventional powerlines, houses already have all the cabling needed for establishing powerline networks and no new cabling is required. In this regard powerline Ethernet offers a similar benefit to wireless; it does not rely on cable being laid.

But unlike wireless, the reach of powerline Ethernet within the home is not limited. Where wireless suffers the obstruction of walls, powerline offers connectivity wherever there is a plug point.

The idea is then to extend the powerline network with wireless adapters, thereby enabling wireless devices in each room to connect to the powerline backbone..." [itweb]

They've been bought out by some businessman that plans to invest quite a bit of cash, maybe that's all being sorted out.

Or maybe Goal is waiting for the new goverment Broadband provider.

They are up and running, I don't think they're a very big company. They're busy rolling out in Durban.

I imagine it's quite a complicated thing at the moment, with line quality and all.

they do have prices up though, R475 for 512k/5Gb.

I hope that's a sign that this will be rolling here in Pta as well.

R300 for 384K/15Gb, that's all I ask!

Where did you find the news that they are rolling out in Durbs?

In Durbs!!!!

I cant believe they rolling out in Durbs. I just moved from there dammit!!!!!! :)

They should finish what they started here first man :) I stay about 10 minutes drive from Clearwater mall on a plot and wondering if it will ever reach me :/

Can anyone provide answer to whether they are rolling out in Durbs and how to get in contact?

You could try Allen Spence, Superintendent of Electricity for Durban. He was the Projects Manager for the Tests being set up here in Sherwood in 2004 and I imagine is still on top of it.
Phone the Main Electricity Department and ask Howard Whiteheads secretary, Rosemary Naidoo for Allens contact details. I am sure he can fill you in on exactly what is happening.
