Security forces raid hostel after BRT attack

A massive force of 350 soldiers, police officers and metro police officers struck back on Wednesday morning after two BRT buses were shot at in Soweto.

The security forces mounted a six-hour raid on Nancefield hostel a few hours after the buses were attacked on Tuesday night. Two passengers were injured.

More than 120 Joburg metro police officers, more than 100 soldiers and many police officers from several stations in the area, including crime intelligence units, took part in the raid.

Police spokesman Inspector Kay Makhubela said the shots came from a white Quantum next to the hostel. A source also said shots were fired from the Quantum, after which the gunman ran into the hostel.

This morning buses were running normally in Soweto and the Joburg CBD. Police manned the stations and each bus was escorted by an officer.

Talk Radio 702 reported, however, that some taxis were blockading the BRT routes near the Noord Street rank.

The response from the police and army wasn't bad though, immediately (same night) raided the hostel where they apparently shot from and arrested 4 people and I believe shot one who opened fire on the 350 army/police like an idiot. Hopefully he was connected to this.

I am surprised and glad at what the SAPS did about the shooting. I saw on E News that there are also policemen on every Rea Vaya bus.

Looks like they are taking this seriously.
