Budget 2018

In the meanwhile, you need to borrow and tax to keep the government running.
You also need to NOT spend more than before. People that are heavily taxed and acutely aware of all the wastage have zero appetite for being taxed even more to fund yet more wasteful spending.

So what time does the s***show start?

Zuma's chickens are coming home to roost.

Because he screwed up so badly, and was so corrupt, they are BILLIONS in deficit. And, there are no easy ways of making that gap up. They can try to tax the rich as they always do, but they are already squeezing the rich hard, and surely even they must realize that there is little juice left to squeeze. Even if they do raise the top tax rate from 45% to 47% or something, there just aren't enough people that earn that much money. And the reason that there aren't enough people that earn that much money is because Zuma's government created basically zero economic growth.

Anyway, it turns out that to make up this deficit, raises in VAT are probably the best way to do it, which hit the poor hardest of all.

So it is ironic that Zuma has created lots of poison pills for the ANC - they have almost no choice but to tax the poor harder because of Zuma's screwups, not to mention things like his promise of free education. And raising taxes on the poor is an issue that will definitely cost them votes in 2019.

ANC, you made your own bed and now you must lie in it. You could have removed Zuma years ago, but you were too worried about what would happen to the party. Well now you know - things have only got worse for the ANC when you refused to remove him.

Increase in VAT will create a massive shyte storm and will further compromise our financial status and ratings.

Only thing that will work is an increase in sugar tax and the fuel levy. Being coke lovers, the poor will get hit but then it becomes a choice.

I just love it how we need to fork out more and more every year for the incompetence of this government.

They sing the song of uplifting people out of poverty but all they do is making people more poorer every year.

I bet 99% of us are worse off every year than before as our salary increases dont keep up with all the increase of state and medical and RA funds ect.

The government only has shyte storms to choose between no.

There is no option available to them that raises the necessary funds without p1$$ing somebody off. It just isn't possible.

And the reason it isn't possible is that the ANC did not vote Zuma out when they have a chance.

Raising VAT is probably the only thing that will keep our ratings as they are.

I'm in favour of the VAT increase. It will cement the concept of cause and effect in the minds of people who pay no other form of tax and thought government mismanagement doesn't affect them while continually voting ANC.

Agreed. I have zero issues with them increasing it

Amen! I'm just very much opposed to raising any form of tax before any of the wastage has been addressed in any significant fashion.

Patch the leak in the milk bucket before you tug harder at the dried up teet FFS!

Newsflash: Malusi Gigaba under shadow on Budget Day as damning judgment emerges

As Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba prepared to give his maiden Budget speech in the National Assembly on Wednesday afternoon, new information about Gigaba’s tenure as Home Affairs Minister emerged. The DA announced that it has laid a complaint with the Public Protector against Gigaba as a result of a damning court judgment handed down in December – which finds that Gigaba violated the Constitution by lying under oath.
