So I've decided to take the plunge and to go ahead and fork out the cash to buy myself a new gaming pc. In essence that is all it will be. I will only be using it for gaming at home and the occasional lan. To aid in this decision I thought that it would be prudent to come here and get some ideas on what everyone thinks a pc such as this should contain.

So if everyone would be so kind as to say what specifications they would have in a pc purely for gaming with a budget of around R10000 please be so kind as to reply to this message :)

DUDE! With 10 grand you can get a behemoth gaming box.

Also, if you have friends who can buy directly from the wholesalers (Rectron, Genex, Sonic Informed, etc) you can give them a 10% markup and still score all the way.

If i had 10 grand to built a system (druel, slobber, urinate) i would opt for the following:
- Some really cool socket 939 mobo, with pref 4 ram slots (2 dual channels). SLI is an option, but i wouldnt go for it, since nVidia SLI sucks (relatively speaking) and ATI crossfire is yet to rear its beautiful head. Aim for something in the R1500 region.

- AMD Atlhon 64 3000+ (this cpu hits the sweet spot money wise, any faster and you waste money, e.g. the 3500+ costs almost double and doesnt yield double the performance)

- ATI x850 XT (PE, if you can find one). Awesome single board sollution. I prefer this to SLI and its cheaper than most SLI sollutions. Also, the 6800 GT is an option since the price is being driven down by the 7800 range. Its also powerful, and the price is making it attractive.

- with 10 grand, i would get 2 x 250 SATA Seagate drives with NCQ. Druel. If there is money left i would get another one, or get a drive to build into a external usb enclosure, which is cool for portability AND semi permanent storage.

- a nice 19" or 21" CRT or a brand spanking new 17" LCD screen. i prefer CRT's but they are a chore to lug around at LAN's, trust me. But since i'm a big boy, i dont give a rats rectum.

- a Coolermaster Stacker case from rectron with crossflow fan. Sweet case, dont have the money for it. It cool most systems to below 40 degrees. Great airflow and open space, just HUGE!!!!

- also think about 5.1 speakers or 5.1 headphones. check toms for latest reviews on those. i have my eyes on one of those.

- o yes, RAM. at LEAST 1GB. No less. If theres money left, go for 2GB (4 sticks of 512MB) to be used in both dual channels

- DVD-Writer, Rectron stocks a wide variety. They all seem to perform relatively the same. This is essential for the anime collectors or, erm, you know, Linux distros

Thats basically it, right? Any how, thats what i would like for Christmas. That and a ferrari please, a black one...

Eye_suc - your predictions are a bit too optimistic I think. Just a quick caculation

Mobo: R1500
Processor: R1200
GFX Card: R5000 (yes - you won't get less than that)
Storage: R1000-R1200
17'inch LCD/21" CRT: R2500

His money is already used up!

Yowser !

R10000 is just fantastic !

R7000 on the video card, monitor and sound

R3000 on the rest

:D

Reason being, for a gaming machine, your visuals and audio just have to be the top notch.

AMD athon64 4000+
Gigabyte. K8NXP-939 Socket 939 Motherboard (Athlon 64)
Sapphire X800XT 256
Corsair 1 GB
2 x Western Digital Raptor 10000 rpm sata hdd 36gb

that should set u up

Well, i wouldnt even consider a card worth that much money :P the 6600gt goes for as little as R1300 ex vat up to R1600 ex vat. 6800gt from as little as R2800 ex vat. did i overshoot again? whoops, was just pretending i was setting up my own 'to buy' list :(

ok, mebe a little TOO over the top, just drop a HDD or 2 then :P but dang, 10 grand? did you win a lotto or summing?

You don't get very top notch visuals/audio with no power behind it.

This is what i (hardware guru) would get.

Motherboard : ABIT A8N-Ultra = R1200
CPU : 3200+ Venice / Winchester = R1600
RAM : ADATA/HYNIX/VALUE Ram (512Mb * x) = R700
GFX : 6800GT PCI = R3800
PSU : AOPEN 450W 24Pin R400
Monitor : 17" CRT (Better Value, best for gaming) = R700
HDD : Hitachi SATA2 160GB = R900
CASE : ANTEC SUPERLAN BOY R700

you could get a cheaper case..maybe a x800xl if ya want want..or the hdd you could get a bigger one .. alll depends..

R10000 on da dot :D

It's the most important area for a gaming box - there's R10 000 to spend, you can get a damn good 19" CRT monitor (LG 19" T910BU Flatron), a 6800GT, a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, a kick-ass 5.1 speaker setup, altec or logitec

What's not to like ?

In fact, you can probably get that lot for R5500

Nothing wrong with that, just that initially you said 7K for a video card, monitor and sound. That would leave 3K for a CPU, Motherboard, PSU, Case, HDD, RAM, Keyboard, Mouse.

I'd like to know where to get the above for 5.5K..

Hmm, your right MansoN, doing a bit of window shopping on sybaritic (yeah, you can get cheaper, I know), I'm at R9500 and I still need to get a case, decent CPU/Case cooling, mouse & keyboard. I chucked out the idea of an Audigy sound card and opted for a top notch motherboard instead.

The RAM threw me for a wobbly, is it just Sybaritic that is so damn expensive, jeez !
R1500 for 512mb ! - ouch
And 512mb is just not enough RAM, that's for sure - minimum 1gig !

AAMD Athlon 64 2800+ Processor - Socket 754, 512k L2 - Boxed R1,064.00

Gigabyte GV-NX66T128D GeForce 6600GT 16xPCIE 128-bit 128MB DDRIII w/TV + DVI R1,875.00

Asus K8V SE Deluxe Via K8T800 Motherboard w/A6 + FW + LK + IDE RAID + SATA RAID R1,511.40

Altec Lansing 251 Versatilve 5.1 Speaker System + AAD200 Dolby Decoder R1,248.00

Seagate 160GB Barracuda SATA150 8MB 7200RPM Hard Drive w/NCQ - Retail R955.00

Kingston DDR533 512MB (2x256MB) HyperX Memory Module Kit R1,463.00

AOpen 19" A90E Monitor - Silver/Black R1,123.00

Codegen Dual Rail 400W Power Supply R308.00

Yeah, at least 1Gb of RAM, and make sure it's a quality manufacturer e.g. Corsair

Also, try get at least a 2Ghz CPU e.g. the 3200+

Another thing, I stand to be corrected, but wouldn't it be better getting a socket 939 processor if you're going the AMD route?
