Build me a PC

Ok so a lot of replies thus far, but I'd still like to see some full systems ;)

Currently what I have jotted down for myself is:

P4 3.2ghz
P4 800fsb performance motherboard
3x 512Mb DDR 400mhz(1.5gb memory)
2x 160GB SATA HDD's
256MB Geforce 6600
17" CRT Monitor
Odds and ends(DVDRW, CDRW, Case, Keyboard, Mouse, etc.)

Comes in at around R8500 so some room for improvement if I want to, but not too shabby a start. I like Intel, have always used it, but I'm sure I can switch to AMD without much of an issue. But we'll leave that debate for another thread.

rather get a AMD athlon64 3200 or 3400 on a Gigabyte. K8NXP-939 Socket 939 Motherboard, if money is a issue try push for the X800, its only R2200

Motherboard : ABIT A8N-Ultra = R1200
CPU : 3200+ Venice / Winchester = R1600
RAM : ADATA/HYNIX/VALUE Ram (512Mb * 2 ) = R700
GFX : 6600GT = R1800
PSU : AOPEN 450W 24Pin R400
Monitor : 17" CRT (Better Value, best for gaming) = R700
HDD : Hitachi SATA2 160GB = R900
CASE : ANTEC SUPERLAN BOY R700
KEYBOARD : LOGITECH MEDIA = R200
MOUSE : LOGITECH MX518 = R450
SOUND : Logitech X-530 5.1 Speaker System = R600
OPTICAL : LG / ASUS / BENQ DVD WRITER = R600

Just under 10k the best system for gaming overall imo.

i think he means that crt is best for gaming not the size ;)

hynix ram is crap, i got it!
Try get corsair of transcend

A 17" monitor is not a real problem, but a 19" is not a lot more money and with a good video card, you can get some nice high res going !

That ram cost is still frikkin' high.

What difference would it really make having DDR400 compared with DDR500 ?
It's a truck load cheaper right now and if it means a 5% drop in performance for half the price, who gives a flying duck ?

corsair and transend are all expensive. hynix ect..all hve lifetime warranty..if u dont overclock then they are fine. also get a 19" crt them if u want.

soz i meant 512mb * 2 = R700

Rather push for a 6600gt, its worth that little bit extra. Also make sure you take VAT into consideration. Most suppliers dont include VAT on their pricelists and 14% of R8500 is a lot of money.

That Intel chip runs very hot. Rather get the AMD CPU for gaming, otherwise you might not hear the game sounds over the CPU fan noise.

As far as I know, you should/must by memory in pairs, to use dual channel support. So, just by two of those DDR sticks for now. 1GB total is enough at the moment. You can always buy more later, but probably only needed for the next version of Windows or something like that.

And if you get the AMD CPU, spend R150 on a decent fan with speed control - they are "fan-tastic" - ouch, that hurt.

Got myself a thermaltake something or other thingy than runs my CPU cool at 3000rpm, can crank the fan up to 4000rpm before it starts making a noise. At 7000rpm it's LOUD. It's got a f@ck-off big copper heat sink on it and the fan - well, just don't get your finger anywhere near it, I did and almost lost the tip of my pinky - blood everywhere.

Definately worth investing that extra bit of cash, because the default boxed fans are a shower of sh1te.

my 3200+ never runs hotter than 45c. Standard fan/heatsink are 100%.

I agree with the others on AMD, get a 3200+.

I have one recommendation, don't skimp on the video card, get a 6800GT (or ATI equivalent) and build the rest of your machine around that. The reason being in a gaming machine the video card is the single most important piece of equipment and you want a card that will last you a while, especially if you're laying down 10g's. You can get a 6800GT for ~R3000 these days so that leaves ~R7000 for the rest of the system. Another option if you're not in a rush is to wait and see what mid-range 7800 cards are released in the next few months. Also when these cards are released the price of the 6800GT will drop.

I agree with Perdition, try getting a 6800GT.

Here's what I (hopefully  ) will be getting in October:

Coolermaster Stacker 830
Antec Neo Power 480W PSU
ASUS A8N SLI-D
AMD64 3200+
Coolermaster Hyper6 (CPU Cooler)
ASUS 6800GT SLI (only one for know :) )
2Gig CorsairValue Ram
Coolermaster Cooldrive6
Seagate 250Gig SATA NCQ

Going to set me back about 10-12 grand!!

Add another 2 grand and you can get a decent 19inch screen plus mouse and keyboard.
