Bumping up line speeds.

0.384 - for %@#&'$ sake!

... said Hayward. "What we would rather do now is up the value (by offering higher speeds). There will be no more drastic price reductions."

So when then? I have a 0.384Mbps DSL. 0.384Mbps! The avrg in many countries is at least 2Mbps. For %@#&'$ sake! :(

Im currently happy with my 4Mbit :) yay - more speed would be nice, but can the IS network really handle it :) hehe

the only time telscum might think of increasing line speeds is when their pockets are soo full of money and they need to increase bandwidth to allow the banks to transfer it all to their offshore personal accounts before they jet off to week no 40 of their allocated holiday.

can anyone see that i'm not a telscum supporter? haha...

56kman i know exactly what you are on about - i lived in the UK for 4 years and there they have uncapped 8mb pretty much standard if you are in town or anywhere near an exchange. i literally watched like 2 gb download in an evening... we are far behind international standards - but MrG sums it up nicely - can our IS support it? if we up the speeds we are just going to use more data...

the cost is a whole different issue... my brother lives outside kingston in london and he pays £15-00p/m for 24MB uncapped... £15!!!! thats only like R250.. now do you see why i am such an avid telscum hater... ;-)

24Mbps uncapped = R250

4Mbps uncapped (on IS) = R99 + R516 + R2200 :) > :o > :( >

From 384 to 1024?

Does anyone know when they are bumping up the speeds?

Will it be

[384k > 512k], [512k > 1024k] and [1024k > 4096k] :(

OR

[384k > 1024k], [512k > 2048k] and [1024k > 4096k] :)

Or maybe, 2Mbps, 4Mbps, 8Mbps

Knowing helkoms lines they will have to do serious upgrading before that happens..

If they can do 4Mbps then they can do 8Mbps. It's ADSL spec. I read about it. There is an ADSL that can only do 1.5Mbps but that's not Telkom's as they are already doing 4.

The line speeds will be upgraded as follows (a Willie Pelser from Telkom told me so)...

384->512 , 512->1024 , 1024->4096 (In other words, those of you with a 4Mbit connection will receive absolutely NO upgrade, nor price reduction..)
Oh, and the prices will remain the same....

This all is scheduled to happen in August (but knowing Telkom, it'll be August 2010 if we're lucky:mad: )

You must not be happy. You must be unhappy. If you lived in France you could get fibre to the home for the money you're paying now. :(

Indeed.

It is an upgrade, but the prices remain the same, so once again Tlekom are not tackling the issues that the customers actually care about.

Basically the upgrade costs them nothing and in fact they're likely to make a profit from the extra bandwidth they sell as a result of the increased speed.

Yip. And as mentioned before 4meg users don't even get 'upgraded'. :(

I don't get this complaint, is that what its meant to be?

Current 4mb users bought a 1mb line, its being trialled at 4mb.

There is no 4mb line per se atm, it will only be officially recognised when these changes happen. The 1mb users just got "upgraded" early, whats the problem?

The point is, as mentioned earlier, that Telkom are doing all of this without any cost to them, and will almost certainly make MORE money with people using up their caps faster.

If you got a 1Mb line recently, then you will have had 4Mb all along and will receive neither an increase in speed nor any kind of upgrade.

I am not particularly happy with the whole situation. Are you?

Rhetorical question.

I am not particularly happy with the whole situation. Are you?

A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question posed to make a statement or initiate introspection rather than for the purpose of getting an answer.

A rhetorical question seeks to encourage reflection within the listener as to what the answer to the question (at least, the answer implied by the questioner) must be. When a speaker declaims, "I am not particularly happy with the whole situation. Are you?", no formal answer is expected.

The above mentioned rhetorical question is one of the best examples I have ever come across!
