i have a RCT ups, it works fine, but has a burnt electrical smell, any idea what it could be .Thanks

talked to RCT ( RECTRON ) , the burning smell is the coating on the transformer burning off, and, yes, the smell is becoming less as time goes by

gives me a good reason to stay far away from that brand and stick to APC

Client had the same problem 2 weeks ago. They couldn't breathe after it was on overnight in their small office.
After waiting a few days it didn't get any better...

A colleague had the same experience. Disappeared after a day or so.

Grew up with a dad that is an electrician and electronics wizard. I'm pretty sure I asked my dad this exact same question when I was 7 or 8. Some electronic components just have that smell especially from heat. It's mostly the capacitors that give off that smell also the transformer. They layer them with either plastic or anti-corrosive solution which tends to burn a little. Not serious. If it stops working, it's serious.

As an electronics tech I don't like the smell of electronics that gets too hot (which is why there is this smell).
Is the smell constant or does it come & go perhaps when the UPS is working hard??
Can you determine what is getting hot??

the smell is noticeable when the ups is in the charge mode only, I still have another 2 weeks to decide if I want to return it to Takealot, although the smell is getting less by the day.

Even more reason to send it back.
Whilst on line the UPS isn't under heavy load and is only charging the batteries..
Get a better unit. I have a 1kVA Delta online going for R1000..

The smell had become much better, but it was still there, so after nearly three weeks had Takelot swap it out for a Kstar, no burning smell, works just as good
