Hmmm.... I think it was here on MyBB that I read an article pointing out that the large number of e-tags sold that SANRAL likes to brag about is largely made up of government vehicles, so it would appear that they in fact do plan to toll the government vehicles.

Taxis and buses which register for eToll exemption are also required to purchase an e-tag so that the vehicle can be identified as it passes through the gantries.
If there is no tag as a vehicle passes through a toll gantry an invoice is mailed based on the VLN.
I'm pretty sure government vehicles will not be charged and if so it would be covered by our taxes in any case.

On friday some unhappy people protested in Turkey about the demolition of a public park.
Last I heard about 10000 people were marching on Parliament and some soccer fans were chasing police riot vans in a Catterpillar.
Might be a good idea to watch the news before forcing something on a disgruntled population.

How are these e-tag devices powered? Do the e-tags use batteries or do they need to penetrate a cigarette lighter receptacle to get their freak on?

Scenario: at the time of passing under a gantry, an unspecified problem exists where there is no power being supplied to an e-tag device which therefore does not communicate its presence to an etrolling gantry, surely SANRAL simply has to look at the photo and see that that particular vehicle is already associated with a specific e-tag and can therefore be billed at the discounted rate?

I am still going to clean my windscreen in the proximity of gantries, I think everyone else should condition themselves to do the same when they are close to the gantries.

That means that if SANRAL's systems are defective on a particular day, and SANRAL does not come clean and admit that the problem was on SANRAL's side, SANRAL can legally charge everyone the higher rate even when motorists had their e-tags in their vehicles.

IMHO the whole system is flawed and open to numerous legal challenges which have the potential of bringing SANRAL to its knees.

In the news this morning on radio, a Vusi Moaner sound bite was played where Vusi claimed that there is an almost equal split between fleet and individual e-tag registrations (600000).

Considering that SANRAL has been and continues to be extremely economical with the truth (for example deciding to go ahead with plans to rollout etrolling nationally which had previously been scrapped by ministerial decree), OUTA should insist that SANRAL uses a reputable auditing firm (like KPMG) to produce and release e-tag registration stats.

Public statistics have put it closer to 60,000.
