Buying a 42" LCD Need advise

So I am buying a 42"LCD (with HD and HDMI).

Im wanting to know if the pricing is decent:

Contrast: 2500:1
Resolution: 1920x1080
Response: 6.5ms
Brightness: 500cd/m2


Price of R5000

Is that a decent deal?

For that price, that TV looks good to me..as long as it's a reputable brand
 
That is very cheap! Depends on the make though. Hifi corp had a special on 40 inch Samsung full hd's for R5999 a couple weeks ago, so the special might be finished. What will the tv be used for primarily?
 
Its a Mecer.

Going to be playing movies from it, playing some WOW... watching some DSTV. Have HDMI port on my gfx card.

go for it. for R5000 you can afford new tech in 2 years. where are you getting it if i may ask?
 
Doesn`t sound to bad. Isn`t Mecer normally rebrands of something, although that goes for so many other makes.
It ends up being all the same.

I`m also looking for a screen this size but those damn LED backlit`s are still to expensive (but would love to wall mount) and I
was told they have 5000hours vs. LCD 60000hours life. Is this true?
So been looking at plasma`s since their price to size ratio is apparently better, and they loose dots not complete lines across
the screen.

I'd say for the price this will be great if TV isn't your main concern. When it is, best to go with a branded screen from the likes of Samsung, LG, Sony etc.

For hooking up to PC, DVDs, games etc. this will be fine!

I have officially purchased the LCD, and a mecer tuner box for TV (R250).

@BOYAH: Its full HD, not half HD.
 
I am buying a full HD LCD TV tomorrow and my budget has given me a choice between the LG-42"LD420, SAM-LA40"C550, and the Sony KDL40EX400, could somebody help me with some gen on which one has the best picture.

3 year I think. Very happy with the purchase, watched Iron Man HD last night, just pissed I forgot the charger for the tv tuner box at work :/ So could only watch movies on my pc.

Not sure about those models but Makro Vaal have these opening specials.

Thanks so much for the advice, after intense research and advice from a non biased salesman, the LG 42LD460 ranked #1 overall, Samsung still has the superior picture quality that I saw with my own eyes and Sony, by far the most superior when it comes to gadgets and bells and whistles. The only problem with the Sony that I observed was the contrast is almost maximum to get a good picture or a couple of hours fooling around with the settings where the LG is set up in a ticky and communicates through the HDMI ports with any make and only one remote control.
Hope this will help somebody else in the future.

Ive been selling TV's for years, and also change my TV at home every 4-6 months. I always come back to plasma no matter what. I suspect though that when a few more generation LED's have come and passed i will move onto LED.

i think the benefits of Plasma far exceed LCD in terms of the average persons use. Far more forgiving with an SD picture. we all still watch a fair amount of SD. Also LCD doesn't come close to beating plasma when watching sport.

Also stay with top brands such as Samsung , Sony and LG. Most of the others are all made by generic manufacturers and labeled/branded for the distributor (Sansui, Sinotec, Telefunkun, Tedelex, G-Hanz, Mecer etc etc)

we have Samsung 42" plasma for R5999, best bang for buck IMO

LOL,, yeah i can see that.

I go to allot of the international trade shows, and spend great deal of time around many different makes/models etc.
My opinion is based purely on my experiences.

IMO i dont see large LCD's been around for much longer, only in smaller sizes.
