I genuinely don't want you to embarrass yourself any further. If we're going to play, then R500 is far too little to take off you. Make it R2,000 and you're on. Put up, or shut up.

The 1.4 is fine if it's just you and perhaps one other person but as already mentioned a car full of people and a hill on a freeway will have the car struggling to hold 120km/hr, not like its going to stop but you'll often find yourself dropping a gear and hovering around 100km/hr, needing to rev quite hard to keep the speed up.

From my experience the 1.6 is a better car, nice to have the extra power, easier to cruise/lower revs and if you are wise with the pedal not much worse fuel economy. If you have an opportunity to get a 1.6 within your budget get it but if you rarely have a car full of people/heavy loads the 1.4 will still be awesome.

Over R1,000 is par for the course for your car and your age, I'm afraid. In a year's time it will come down though, probably under R1,000. Also, you can check with your folks if you can get it done through their household insurance (assuming you don't have your own). Couple of ways to reduce your premiums.

As for 1.4 vs 1.6, 1.6 all the way. Adds a lot for overtaking, carrying passengers, and if you're at altitude where non turbo/supercharged engines are papper than closer to/at the coast.

Thanks for the informative advice.
But comparing the 1.4 to these new small turbo engine say your clio 1.0 or the vw 1.2 66kw... Do you think the 1.4 can be very bad compared to those? Ive driven the 66kw clio, i must say its very slow and i found myself changing down alot driving on hills on the highway. But If if the 1.4s perfomance can be compared to that i think i can live with it..

Do you know this based on insurers assessments? And you not having any credit rating before is most probably the worst thing counting against you. Why do you not have any credit rating at age 24?

Just as an aside, don't go solely by kW. VAGs tend to have torquey engines, and this is where things count the most - acceleration, hill climbing, moving passengers/cargo, etc.

The 1.2 TSI has 160Nm torque. The 1.4 N/A has 132Nm IIRC. So the 1.4 will be worse.

If you must have a newer lower mileage car, go 1.6 minimum. Otherwise look at smaller turbo engines if you can afford that.

I'll hint at it again though. Remember, the newer you go for, the less value you get. I would look at an older VAG with a bigger engine (even if it's a 1.6) and better features. It will feel much more solid on the road, drive better, be comfier, and be safer too. They are built better.

The best value you will find is a 2007/2008 Audi A3 8P or Audi A4 B7. The VW equivalents are the Golf/Jetta 5. But for R150,000 you are in Audi A4 B8 or Audi A3 8P facelift territory. Or possibly Golf/Jetta 6.
