Buying a GraphicsCard

Thanks guys, ATI it will be!

Good decision

You can always get a new mobo that will support 3 way crossfire and then get 3 HD4890 cards which will eat all the nvidia cards;)

BTW what games are you playing and at what resolutions are you playing at?

Also I heard that the hd4890 will support dx11

lol 3 cards are a bit of an overkill!

im playing @ 1980x1080,

it will only be graphic intensive games like crysis, far cry2 or any other future FPS

Wife has the HD4890 on her asus board running 3gig ram and stock q6600, runs damn fine! Not as good as mine but damn close!

ATI=value for money and good performance
Nvidia=pricey but also good performance on certain cards

Your 280GTX is almost double the price of the 4890

Get 2 4890's in crossfire and see who will win:D

OK blaaislaai,
Your system looks very good.
The only thing you do not give is your screen size or resolution.
There is such a thing as overkill too :)

SLi or Xfire is the most expencive way to increase graphics performance by a loooong way. - Just my opinion...
Rather just buy the newer more improved cards.

For 19" to 22" I would say the Nvidia 250/260 or the ATi 4850/4870 is more than enough horse power.
For 22" to 24" you can go for the 270/280 or the 4890.
Bigger than 24" look at 295 or 4870x2. Jip, that is dual cards in one slot, still no need for SLi or Xfire board.

You PSU looks like it could handle all of these cards without a problem, except perhaps for the 4870x2. In general I found that the ATi cards require much more power than the similar Nvidia product.

I know, if the 4890 was out last year when I got my gtx280, I could have bought 2 for the price of one gtx280. the 4890 is amazing for the price, i notch it above a gtx260 but below the 275 and 280. but not by a whole load!

Thanks for the valuable info,

I have a 23" screen, so I'll be playing games at 1980x1080.

You'll most likely never SLI, go with the 4890.. just better bang per buck.

The performance of the HD4890 is similar to a GTX275. But if you're overclocking then the HD4890 wins hands down. It has been shown to perform as well as a GTX280, both cards overclocked.
