Hi!

I'm planning on getting myself a new GAMING computer. I just need some advice on what one would be able to get for R8000. We're only talking about the box....Keyboard, mouse and monitor are excluded here.

Suggestions for what CPU, Graphics card etc. are welcome!

Thanks!

Set this one up myself....What do you think?

Go for a Q6600. A little cheaper, but most I think most will agree that it's worth it.

That hard drive seems a bit expensive for that size. Get a 500GB drive, uh best price/capacity ratio at the moment.

If you look around I'm sure you can find an 8800GT for cheaper than that if you look around. What about the case?

Then these are the other options regarding Graphics cards:

ASUS ATi Radeon HD3870 512MB DDR4 PCI-E 2.0
ASIC RV670PRO (55nm)
Core Clock 775MHz
Memory Clock 2252MHz

Supports DirectX 10.1
Shader Model 4.1 & OpenGL
Native ATi CrossFireX Ready
HDCP, Double Dual-link DVI,
AVIVO, PCI-E 2.0

Just one question. I see two of these cards are PCI-E 2.0. Will this work with the motherboard that I've selected?

Thanks for the input!

A little cheaper? Please explain!

R699 is the best that I can come up with as regards to a 250 GB HDD. Maybe if I could cut the price by selecting one of the cheaper ATI cards above, I could go with a 500GB, which costs just over the 1K mark.

Standing by for your reply!

Intel Core2Quad Q6600 R2273.16 (VAT included) from PC International :)

It's still more expensive!

The Intel E6750 Core2 Duo 2.66GHz (R 1,816.00), has a higher clock speed and a higher fsb clock speed (1333mhz fsb).....

....as apposed to the cpu you are recommending. This leaves me to the conclusion that quad core cpu's play a very big role in gaming, hence the reason it being more expensive.

Can anyone confirm this?

My bad. Meant to write a little more expensive. Ya, get the Q6600 from PCint.

It seems the 8800GT is prob the way to go, but I've heard of them being sold for about R2300 but expect to pay R2500. And don't worry about manufacturer (asus, gigabyte etc) because they're all the same. The HD3850 isn't a bad idea either (R1750 at prophecy.co.za) but it won't provide the same performance as the 8800GT.

I'd say rather save on the hard drive than on the graphics card, as you can always buy another hard drive later. PCint has good prices for WD hard drives as well. Otherwise look up SlicK on the Prophecy Classifieds. He has great prices for hard drives (bought a 320GB WD drive from him a few months ago) if he still has stock.

More and more games are becoming multi-threaded which means multiple cores are becoming more and more useful :D Games such as Supreme Commander and Crysis already use all 4 cores. If you're worried about the stock clock and FSB, just overclock the Q6600 to 3GHz (333 x 9) then you have a 3GHz quad core also running on a 1,333MHz FSB ;)

But it's still a beast, whether you overclock it or not... And I think the extra two cores are the reason why it's more expensive :p

Thanks for clearing that out!

That leaves me with one last question!

IS IT A GOOD TIME TO UPGRADE? Considering upcoming hardware releases etc.

I upgraded recently, can't see any reason for you not to (unless you really want/can afford a 45nm CPU and DDR3 RAM :p)

I see the FSB frequencies don't match. Is this a problem?

No it will still run at 1,066MHz. It's only a problem when you put a 1,333MHz CPU into a motherboard that only supports 1,066MHz :)
