Buying a new computer!

erm....all the ATI cards that I posted were 512mb.....using higher clock speeds than the 8800GT.

Why is everyone so obsessed with the 8800? Something I'm missing?
 
well... not really sure, but the buzz of late allover the net is the 8800's preformance. To be quite honest, I'd also like to know which is better, a high end ATI or the High end NV's ? ?

What i did find out is, if you're going to run dual 8800's, you apparently need a really decent powersupply to run those in SLI. about 850w the one website said...

Some 8600GT models also have higher memory/clock/shader speeds than the 8800GT but that doesn't mean they're faster. It seems these "stream processors" are what it's all about :)

As has been discussed in this forum before I think, power requirements are oh so often over stated. Look at beanie's pretty l33t system, running on 500watts. This, apart from the extra gfx, is already more than the OP has planned. An extra graphics card won't exponentially increase power requirements. What's arguably more important, is the stable supply of voltage, and the amps on each rail.

Ya, the 8800GT is also made using the more efficient 65nm process.
 
For interest You may want to check at the East Rand mall flea market. There is a Big PC stall if you enter the turnstiles from the Pick and PAY side turning sharp right. On the far right/top shops . They promo the MSI 8800GT overclocked at R2950.00 + a Free game of choice until Monday the 24th.
Transcend 2*1gig ram with heat spreader in set is R1150.00. I paid R1000.00 for OCZ DDR2 2*1gig (Not in set) at Bison today. I was hard-up for ram.

Thanks for that, but either way, I'm getting the CoolerMaster 1000w supply. I'm planning to spend about R40 000 on a new pc soon...

Someone elses comment about the 8800's are in gerenal better, it doesnt really answer my question:

The Best of Nvidia vs The Best of ATI - Which is better ??? Also, if Nvidia has SLI, what does ATI have ???
I currently have a ATI card in my pc. I've always used Nvidia before, (not that the ATI doesnt preform well) just for some odd reason i seem to want to go NVidia again...

Well, to answer your question: I think that the GeForce 8800 Ultra is currently the best performing GPU available, so I'd say the best of NVIDIA beats the best of ATI...
 
Well... I'm planning to go buy nextyear (depending if there's something better available by then). I'm buying basics at this stage as the whole machine will cost too much in one go. So only replacing these parts:

1x Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
1x Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4
1x Corsair DDR2-1066 (4x1Gb) Dominator Module Kit
2x Asus EN8800GTS/HTDP/640meg 320bit
1x Cooler Master Real Power Pro RS-A00 1000w PowerSupply
1x Cooler Master NV-830 CM Stacker 830 NVidia Edition

Might take a second Zalman CNP9500 otherwise i'll just use the one i have...

But then I wonder I it would perform against the ASUS ATi Radeon HD3870, which is a much newer card. It just doesn't make any sense to me!! Although the Radeon has way better core an memory speeds than the 8800GT(with memory size etc being all the same, oh and the Radeon supports shader model 4.1 as aposed to 4.0), people are still insisting on the 8800.

No one has actually given me a good reason why I should rather go with 8800GT. Or is the 8800 just the in thing now a days and everyone has to get it?

Please someone, enlighten me!!

The HD3870 has a 775MHz shader clock (for the so-called "stream processors", think of it as the old pixel- and vertex pipelines) while the 8800GT has a 1,500MHz shader clock. The 8800GT also has 56 texture units while the HD3870 has 16. And according to this the Radeon doesn't support Shader Model 4.1? :confused:

It doesn't all boil down to core- and memory clock speeds any more.
