Buying a UPS

The common denominator is the UPS. You have tried different batteries. It sounds like the UPS is faulty.

Hope someone can assist me with my power needs also :p

I have 750va UPS that runs my adsl router on its own ,which survives load shedding with power to spare.

Now i want to get a UPS for my gaming laptop and maybe the xbox and tv.

Laptop power supply is rated at 150watts.

Tv is a samsung 32 inch 5 series FULL HD.

Xbox one uses around 250watts i think.

I want to get this UPS : http://www.takealot.com/mecer-2000va-line-interactive-ups/PLID34152441

How long will I able to run my laptop at full load ? ( battery on gaming laptop does not last long lol)

And how long will I able to run the xbox one and tv while gaming?

Regards

I was looking at one of these BR900GIs, but couldn't justify the cost for my needs.

Went with the RCT 2000VA Line Interactive. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/622463-RCT-Line-Interactive-UPS-Quality/page2

I'd be interested to know the battery setup in the APC? Anyone know? http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR900GI

The RCT has 2x 12V 9Ah batteries.

Got RCT 2000VA UPS 2 days ago... doesn't seem to have a way to plug on an extra battery pack. Am I missing something? I am considering replacing the batteries with larger ones to get more running time If I can't connect an extra battery pack.

I think I am finally sorted with my UPS woes.

Last night I pulled the trigger on an RCT 2000VA Line Interactive UPS from Takealot. They said this morning it is out for delivery already, so I may even get it today. http://www.takealot.com/rct-2000va-line-interactive-ups/PLID32714413

I also enquired about an inverter at some battery shop at Greenstone. They said they would get back to me - and they did this AM.
1000W 24V inverter with a 5A charger. R2,200. Supplier only has 3 left in the country, so I decided to get it even though I just purchased the UPS. Going to pay for it just now, and can collect it tomorrow. http://www.powermaster.com.tw/PM-A-1000AH.htm

Inverter can go on the 2 x 102Ah for my server rack, dev PC and outside lighting.
UPS can go in the house for inside wifi and lights. Will probably hook up the 2 x 70Ah to it, then can also run the bedroom TV (other side of the wall to where it will live).

So far I have escaped load shedding this week, but we start to fall within the normal run of the mill schedule from tomorrow afternoon - so just in time.

EDIT : Scrap that. Went to pay and the freaking things does not include a charger - after I asked them to source one with a charger.
Hopeully this RCT works out well. Will just get more of those then.

I also investigated doing this, but the cost is prohibitive. Go to apc.com, they have a calculator that determines the UPS size based on your load and time you want it to run. For that type of setup you will need a 1000 or 1500 VA UPS and a extra battery pack. This will cost you probably between R8000 and R10000 (going on wootware's prices). I have decided to just run the ADSL modem and use my phone or a tablet for entertainment for those 2 to 4 hours.

With a standard 2000VA ups you probably won't get more than 20 mins with all of that one, and draining the batteries that much every do or so is definitely not good.

Please check recent posts in thread, someone has already replaced the stock 2x 12v 9AH batteries with 2x R1,500 deep cycle batteries. This is probably what you're interested in. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/622463-RCT-Line-Interactive-UPS-Quality

Please also comment if yours gives/gave off an electrical smell after being first plugged in for the first few hours/days?

Hi Mike

I just bought the very same ups. I can buy this inverter, but not sure if it will work or not see pics

Guys is this inverter/charger/ups good enough for xbox one ,tv and laptop ? http://www.takealot.com/mecer-1200va-720w-inverter-battery-charger-ups/PLID34173668

Thinking of that with 60ah deep cycle battery.

Total load would 450watt max.

Spoke to buy at battery center he helped me.

50ah battery will be enough for 2 hours for my laptop. R1100 for the battery

110ah battery should be enough for xbox one and tv. R1500 for the battery

Can somebody take a look at my calculations please. I wanted to compare battery value taking into consideration cycles and discharge percent, and the total hours available over it's lifetime. I couldn't find the rated capacity at x amps so I guessed. Am I on the right track or do I have a spreadsheet of nonsense?

Spanks tiger.

Did a quick trawl but didn't see those posts. Will open my eyes a bit wider and read again.

No smell on my unit. Works like a charm... only I haven't been load shed since I bought it. Had to test it by unplugging it.

I found it a little annoying that they provided no cable for the AC connection yet two other kettle plug cables (female one end, male the other). Just sliced one of the ends off a cable they provided and added my own 3 prong plug.

Here you go - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ive-UPS-Quality/page2?p=14573603#post14573603.

Is yours in a large room? Mine's in a 3x4m room. Left the window wide open today to air out and the smell has decreased, looks like it'll go away.

Agreed, they should have supplied one. Thankfully I've got a few lying around.

Hi Mike

I just bought the very same ups. I can buy this inverter, but not sure if it will work or not see pics
The first inverter is the same one I was going to buy. I pulled out because it does not include charging. How much are they asking for it.
The second modem I don't know.
The home made one, I don't have a clue

Hi Mike

The 2nd one is the charging unit. I can get it for R1500 for both. The guy had it for a year. You think it's worth it.

I just googled the model number, and Ye - it is the charger. R1.5k is a steal. I nearly paid R2.3k odd just for the inverter today.

If you don't take it, give him my number please ;) and if you decide you don't want it after a while, PM me :)

Will let you know Mike. I am just making sure that I have all the right stuff.

Ok, so I bought the RCT 2000VA Line Interactive UPS from Takealot today. My buddy brought me this deep cycle battery. One mother faking monster and I cannot even pick it up. What I wanted to know if I can connect this deep cycle battery with the existing batteries.

I believe the RCT is 24v, somyou need another of those batteries. The problem is they will take days to recharce on the RCT, as the charger is not big enough for bigger batteries.

Yes, it is 24V and you need two deep cycle batteries to achieve this.

Someone in another thread has said it takes 10 hours to charge his 2 x 100Ah batteries from 50 to 100%.
Not shabby at all.

I am hooking up my two 102Ah batteries to my RCT tomorrow when it arrives.
