They can keep trying....

and that R24 is incorrect since some of the "functions" they pay taxes for are paid for in Gauteng etc etc..... plus... R100 they pay in taxes.. they get 25% of it back.. thats a pretty healthy percentage considering we have 9 provinces.

They're a bunch of morons if you ask me... they'll never be able to setup an independent state, and I doubt they'd get the backing of the majority of the voting population.

"For every R100 that the Western Cape pays in taxes only R24 is returned and spent on the needs of the Cape people."

I find this very interesting!

They plan to create an independant state, a country consisting of Western Cape and Northern Cape.

Considering the cultures, affiliations with each other, wealth and stong development, i think that this would be something to think about, and I am actually a bit sorry that i haven't known them before, a few seatsfor them might be an interesting decision for our future.

Bit late now:rolleyes:

If it was possible, do you think the Western Cape and/or Northern Cape would be able to pull off being independent?
Would it flourish without the rest of the country, or would it struggle?
Interesting to hear what the thought would be :)

There are too many pieces to the cogs... most of the countries power comes from the Coal stations, and I don't think the cape has enough to power itself... so that would be a MAJOR stumbling block.

No, an independant Cape would NOT have 4 times more money to spend on its people...

It would need a new currency which would need to be proved on the international market, it wouldn't have the large manufacturing capacity of Gauteng to help bouy it up... They would also need to run all the arms of government that they currently don't pay for..

Ultimately my guess is the Cape would have LESS money if they were independant of SA

Plus you'd only have one decent rugby team :D

Thats the stormers.... not decent.... so no.. Rugby would fail as well, and then why the hell would anyone want to live in the country? :D

I would move to a DA run Cape Republic in a heartbeat.

However, realistically they don't have the resources to successfully be an independent country.

Lesotho is independent? How do they differ from the Cape if the Cape was independent?
I'm sure Lesotho relies a lot on SA
Is it due to the fact that there would be a much greater demand for things in general in the Cape as opposed to Lesotho, as they are a "simple" people?

Lesotho is not independent other than in name... SA pumps HUGE amounts of money into that country iirc.

Lesotho's infrastructure is not tied into the South African government. Most of South Africa's infrastructure is still nationalised or only partly privatised. The Cape will need a shipload of money to buy all the infrastructure from the SA govt.

Lesotho has always been "independent" afaik.

I thought as much but wasn't too sure. If some one could enlighten me I'd really appreciate it:

Transvaal=?
Northern Transvaal= Bulls?
Natal=Sharks?
WP=Stormers
Eastern Cape=???
Freestate=???
Western Transvaal=???

And dragging this back on topic.....Some one metioned the other day about all the military installations. Also don't forget Cape Town is an important harbour or at least it used to be..

Industry? The Western Cape has had the fastest growing industry over the past few years.

And besides, I think that if we did start and independent nation,much of joburgs companies may be moved south, as it is usualy the fact that the JSE is run their that the companies, banks and such are all situated there, all ur students move to gauteng too, where as if CAPE had it's way there woul be a Cape stock exhange, and trough that more companies woul move to and be setup in the cape.

Ok heres the deal you can have the JSE Gauteng wants Table Mountain moved to Hartebeespoort Dam. :D

Its a little bit more blurred now than provincial borders

Cape Town - Stormers
JHB - Lions
Pretoria - Bulls
Durban - Sharks
Bloem - Cheetahs

then there are a few others I can't rem atm :p

Ok, you convince companies that have spent hundreds of millions to build their HO's in JHB to move from JHB down to CPT cos its so attractive... oh and all the banks who have their HO's in JHB.... with all the processing abilities etc.. that would no longer be available to the CAPE since it would involve Forex stuff...
