Most effective way to deal with cable thieves....

Johannesburg - Two would-be copper cable thieves drowned near Marble Hall in Limpopo after a farmer shot them on Tuesday, police said.

The 40-year-old farmer shot at the men after he caught them digging up cables around 03:00, Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said.

"The men, aged 32 and 35, ran into the farm dam and drowned. Both had bullet wounds in the head and upper body," Ramatseba said.

"Their lifeless bodies were recovered by police divers. The firearm used was confiscated for further investigations.

The case will be sent to the director of public prosecutions who will decide on the matter," Ramatseba said.

The names of the Mpumalanga men would be released as soon as their families had been notified. No arrests have been made.

If the farmer is white (which probably he is) and the 2 thieves are black (which probably they are), then the farmer is in BIG siht. The rest is not important. Sad but true.

In the event of a shooting, especially where there are fatalities, there is a standard process to be followed.

In the end I doubt if the NPA will prosecute the case. (regardless of race)

Dude, get over yourself, will you? What the police did is standard procedure.

The farmer was probably high fived by the cops in private.

Yes please!

Tired of these inconsiderate idiots who do what they wish. We need more vigilant people like this around.

+1 to you sir!

To fire multiple shots at the heads and upper bodies of 2 guys trying to steal a piece of cable seems a LITTLE extreme dont you think?

Cable theft endangers lives. It should be equated with treason, because of the damage it does to the economy.

And they still ran and jumped into a dam with bullet wounds in the head and upper body?

Horatio would be testing for water in the lungs right about now.

Good on the farmer anyway.

On the contrary....the law states minimum violence.
His life was not at risk..."presumably"...and they posed no risk to him.
If he shot at them running away....then he is going to have to answer for that.

Not in the least.

He wasn't shooting to kill - he was just shooting them in the head. No different from the police.

No. Not at all. Why do you think it is extreme? It's the only part sticking out of the water.

I hope they find weapons in that dam otherwise the guy is gonna have a hard timing explaining how it's self defence.

No matter what race, if the thieves were unarmed, the farmer is in serious dwang... why could he not call the police to handle the matter, or was his life in danger. My guess is the thieves were armed!

Call the police!!!!!!!! And we must believe the report? Me thinks other things happened.

He's a farmer, his life is at risk in SA. It was 3AM in the morning, obviously dark outside. How would he know if they were armed? They were trespassing and stealing. They obviously had tools which they used to steal the cables. They might have threatened him with the tools and then only ran after he defended himself. Reasonable doubt? Check!
