South Africa would have 11 more public holidays in addition to the 12 it has already if all the religious groups which made representations to the public holiday hearings held in Durban on Thursday were to get their way. Not represented at the hearings was the Jewish community, which means that number could be even higher.

Are they being serious! Why don't they just make 4 days weeks while they are at it!

I hate my job.
Bring it on baby

I know I know. Bad for the ecconomy... and all that.

Scrap all public holidays. All. Even Christmas. And just stipulate the minimum leave that an employer should give. Then people can take it whenever they please.

Just give me 34 days leave. 20+ the 14 existing holidays.

Why would anyone be against this? We work too much as it is. What is wrong with you people?!

Relax, Live, Enjoy.

FFS give everyone 12 extra days leave and take all public hollidays away

Yep my thoughts as well, maybe just a little bit different. List 25 (or how many religious holidays they want) and give each person extra Religious leave. Let them decide which days they want to take off.

besides I only see 4 days as being religious holidays (Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas day and Day of goodwill) all the rest are historical (if thats the right term for them) holidays.

Be an Atheist, take a long holiday

The Rastafarians asked for five religious days to be observed by public holidays. They did not expect them all to be considered.
National Swazi Gold Day, National Durban Poison Day, National Skunk Day? Ye mon, I could live wid dat :D

This idea. I like it.

I guess the only problem could come in if the majority of people try to take a specific day off (e.g. Christmas) and the business is left to struggle with a labour shortage. While they could deny leave requests, the religious nature of these days might make things tricky.

Erm while we at it can we add Wicca holidays as well.

Would love the 11 day feast over Xmas for the turning of the season as well as the 7 day harvest feast, new year(31st of October) and loads of other days where they honor different goddesses.

I'm an architect. It's not uncommon in my industry for an employer to force their employees to take their leave at certain times of the year. Generally we're forced to take leave over the builder's holidays which coincide with Christmas. Offices close. It's written into our contracts.

It's always bothered me taht I have to take up to 14 days some years at Christmas time. It's winter in Europe where my family live and it's so busy here in the Cape. I'd rather work some years.

The point is that I guess a company could decide that they're closing the office at a certain, random time of the year and contractually force their staff to take their leave then. As long as you have sufficient leave remaining or an option to take unpaid leave to respect your personal religious holidays, I would think it would be fine.

I can imagine a situation where my office is closed and I have to take ten days in May, but I'm free to take a couple of days over Christmas to respect that tradition of mine. Sure, most of the office would probably want to take leave around December 25, but you only need a couple of days off.

To be fair, I prefer the Summer holidays and closing of companies during this time. Mostly because of school holidays and the fact that closed companies = less trucks on the main roads between Durban & JHB or Cape Town and JHB.

I guess a counter argument is that if all the companies do not close less people will be on the roads but the fact is that its normally the best time of the year to take your children away on holiday(Weather+ schools closed)

In all fairness, we should also make Ra's birthday a public holiday. He is the god of the sun after all. Knowing how important the sun is, it's probably best not to piss him off.

We are having our Mid Winter Solstice Feast (Dinner) on Saturday night. Yes,
I know, it's a couple of days late.
