Calling all BlackBerry data hogs

Another explanation: CellC and 8ta have much cheaper BIS packages than Vodacom and MTN. (Still waiting for http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...kBerry-Internet-Service-from-Vodacom-incoming)

The article makes use of the word abuse. So who is complaining here. The author? The users? I know both Vodacom have definitely done so. MTN meandered around with their wording. No comment from CellC & 8ta, do they consider it abuse, or are they quite happy with Vodacom's pricing and policies giving them it's customers?

Are CellC & 8ta's bottom lines affected by data hogs? And are their customers unhappy?

So, is this why my 8ta data speed has decreased since I started with them 1.5 years ago. It used to be really fast and reliable, but the past 6 months have been terrible. I hope 8ta and Cell C stop the abusers that are making it worse for us that are paying a per GB price for our data.

So are VC and MTN proud that their clients are moving to another network?!? What kind of ridiculous logic is that? I am pretty sure Cell C and 8ta are not too bothered by getting more customers, they should have sufficient bandwidth capacity to cater for them. I would love to know how many of those users moved to Android or an Apple device on Cell C or 8ta using cheap data bundles...

Someone I know was called by MTN and was told their service was going to be cancelled as they had used 700gb in the last month downloading movies - he somehow managed to tether it to his PC with BIS. A user like this on your tower would degrade your service as that works out to around a constant 2.16mbps (on average). So for someone paying a hefty amount for a proper data plan, this potentially means their data speed is 2mbps less than it should be. Which if you are getting 0.5mbps - 1.5 mbps is a huge difference. I fully support the networks stopping abuse, I don't have a problem with BIS peeps using 1gb a month but 700gb is just ridiculous. Cap it at 500mb - 1gb

The thing that I dont understand is that It is good and understandable when companies with big money rape us, But when you remove the panty of the big company, then hell breaks loose. ( We havent even started to rape yet) So since then im married to cell c, its network gives me better gaming experience. Vodacom is more like ANC, Telkom and Dstv just because it has lots of people behind them.

I cant believe they bitch and moan about 1GB a month.
I have a HTC Desire S and use Cell C prepaid Data bundles and I use about 800MB a month (R120) and only because I cant afford any more. And I only do Facebook and read tech websites. I am certainly no heavy user.
I dont upload to cloud storage. I dont use Youtube. And I sure as hell dont do videocalls (even though there are many apps for that). To save on data I have to disable background data on my Android phone.

In short, I am NOT using my phone like we are supposed to use our smart phones. This is the year 2013. Not 2003! Its time that South Africa start getting with the times so that we can use the internet to its full potential. Until that day we will always be some sad ass thirdworld country.

There is something very wrong with your phone then. My wife has the same phone and I have a Galaxy S2. We get by on 250mb bundles that last us two months! We use our phones quite a lot, certainly more than what you describe there.

Wi-fi much?

Its unfortunate that there are the few who will ruin it for everyone else. Cell C and 8ta need to put something in place.

so you saying that they give you a service and you not allowed to use it to its full (false) potential?

The full potential is using it for unlimited messaging and browsing ON DEVICE. No one is trying to stop that or disallow that.

What they are trying to avoid is abusing it BEYOND its full potential - as in downloading movies that you can't even watch on the paltry 3.something " screen of an inferior phone.

so if i have a utorrent client on the device it is in TOS then? never like crapberries anyway

Downloading torrents is definitely not what unlimited browsing on BIS was intended for, you are abusing the network.

Even on my Mweb uncapped ADSL if I download torrents through a gateway or service that bypasses the shaping mechanism I am abusing the service. They reserve the right to change my account from normal uncapped (R540 a month) to business uncapped (R1899 a month).

Play by the rules and you won't get burned.

uncapped mean no restrictions? since when cant you use for whatever you want to download?
or is that they cant really provide uncapped service?

There is a big difference between uncapped and unshaped... That is what BB users still need to learn. But actually they don't have to learn it because unlimited data on BB is dead.

uncapped meaning no limit to amount of data you can get(withing the max speed of your dl device), shaped some ports prioritised aka http and email.

Not so long ago I tested 8ta bis just to see how it really stacks up to its competitors.

http://2share.co.za/Files/blackberryspeed2.jpg

Yup that is a 1.8GB file I downloaded at pretty impressive bis speeds. A 8ta simcard that is allowed both MTN and 8ta network access is still the better option if you want real speeds on your blackberry.... Its so much faster and actually unlimited than MTN and Vodacom will EVER be.

*This is a test. I have 4Mbps uncapped at home so no need to download large files on my blackberry.

I don't bother with surfing over BIS...I'd need to shave every few page loads its so slow.

Rather wait till I get home to ADSL - then I can pull a couple gigs per day at high speed and nobody cares.

Also, for the record...MTN BIS still blows. Throttling strategies or not, the experience for super light users is still pathetic.

I moved from Vodacom to CellC because of slow performance - congestion. Hope I don't have that problem with CellC now...

250MB lasts you 2 months??!?!!!! Wtf. Dude you and your wife most defnitely are not using your phones a lot. I guess you are SMS and Whatsapp addicts or summing. But at 250MB for 2 months you most defnitely dont use the browser a lot. Or perhaps you work for Vodacon who are trying to make us believe that 250MB are tons of data (ala Jannie).
And no I dont do wifi at all (none in my area). But you clearly do it a lot to survive on 250MB for 2 months (being in Stellenbosch and all as well...)
