Calling all gamers

*killer1973 gets slapped in the face*

*falls down crying and kicking*

You know how rumors are flying around we'll this is one of those "rumor" thingy's.
Whilst trying to play a clan match on xbox live during wednesday evening a person in our lobby said that everyone using vodacom 3g is having trouble playing online and the same person said that he heard that they (meaning vodacom) are port blocking all gamers on their network.

Hence- My ridiculous post about "apparently vodacom port blocking" sorry.

I have noticed the following regarding my connection via E272 modem and laptop.

I get decent downlink and uplink speeds with and ave ping of 300ms but for some reason my NAT has changed from OPEN to MODERATE. I always had an open NAT when using the "unrestricted" APN and a moderate NAT using any other APN whether "Internet" or "InternetVPN".

When palying online i have gone from a healthy 3 bars to an unhealthy one red bar with massive lag. (pull trigger wait 11.2433 seconds bullets hits wall scenario)

I would just like to know if there is a problem nationally with regards to gaming on vodacom 3G or if there is no problem.

I have phoned 155 for assistance and they just took me through the process of changing my APN again so that did not change my situation.

PS. i even switched off my firewall and virus scanners to see if it makes any difference but it did not.

Please help.

*waiting for a kick in the face*

From the sounds of it, you are being beaten up enough on-line as it is. Or can you aim 11 seconds in from of someone? :)

What's an OPEN or MODERATE NAT?

I don't know of any 'generic' problem that can affect latency but lets try and get a approximate time you guys believe the problems started. Always helpful.

BTW, we have tried to construct a gaming latency monitor but it turned out not to be so easy.

Any ideas would be great. (Outside of paying one of you to play on-line games 24/7 :))

i wouldnt mind that at all getting paid to game all day and night :) . I have sent you a PM as per requested V3g

Lag and Delay

I have also noticed a big change when playing games online.

Before I used to get decent ping on 60ms to 90ms when playing warcraft III online on our local war3 server. But for the past week I have been constantly getting a 340ms to 380ms ping.

I have a E272 modem and I stay in Midrand two roads away from Vodaworld. My internet browsing speed seems to be fine, its just in playing a game. I do not lag out or disconnected, there is just a big delay from when I click for and action till when it actually does the action.

V3g can you tell us what is happening behind the scenes in vodacom in sorting out the gaming ping issues? if you can

it might be possible, this has been going on now for abt 2 weeks, gaming had become ***, continous lag/spikes ping form 120-140 to 375(lowest) 400-700

400 average at the mo

For the last two weeks I have been getting good latency on WoW (about 600), with occasional but serious lag spikes, forcing me to reconnect. The lag spikes was rare though, being twice a evening at most.

Since Saturday, I have been getting over 1000ms ping, with a lot of variance. During a fight, I would go from almost immediate response to waiting a second or two before an attack lands. It was slightly better on Sunday, but I only played during the morning for about 3 hours.

yay back to normal 100ms for me hope all other areas are sorted too.thx a mil :) .
ps : it makes a huge difference thx v3g i know it was you.

Oddly enough, I noticed that when playing TF2, my latencies to the IS servers are much higher than the usual SGS servers when using VC.

SGS is 120ms, and IS is 360ms - anyone experiencing similar? (MTN is 110ms to both)

Not a great concern, as I mostly WoW. Haven't had any problems there for a while. :)

Well that right there is [a big part] of your problem(s), are you using an outdoors external antenna with your E272, and if not, have you tried taking your notebook and E272 outdoors and tested latency etc outdoors?

To answer your question: Yes i am using a poyinting antennea out side and a cradle for the E272 modem.

My signal strength is -77db

hey V3g i just want to say that pings in warcraft 3 are back to normal and also to thank you for hearing us gamers out when in trouble.
thanks again for the help in sorting things out

I went last night and bought myself a prepaid sim card for R2. Then I loaded a data bundle of 500m from FNB. so for R191 I was connected and the speeds was pretty decent. I live close to vodaworld and have fulle signal HSDPA. :D

- What is the problem (lag, latency, ping, disconnects)
lag, have pretty decent latencies ~100 - 127 in war3
- What game are you playing (is it a FPS, real-time or turn based etc)

- Which data card are you using
E220, with telkom firmware and dashboard

- The modem type and firmware rev.
USB E220, lastest firmware I could get
- The APN you used
internet

I haven't enabled 3.6m HSDPA yet.

Hope this info is helpfull. :D

@Shaarkbait you getting normal latency to the server. I cant speak for 3.6 HSDPA im sure when you activate it, you will tell us if your latency drops.

Teah, will check tonight again, but I am really surprised with it. No fancy trick or settings... Single usb cable, it's a bit long so the modem is hanging in the window. Browsing flies and mail downloading as well. I used VC 3G last year in March and back then it wasn't this quick.

Edit: Won't be enabling 3.6 as you still have to pay for that. :( Don't think it will make that big of a difference with the games, so no use in paying for it.
