Calling all gamers

Today there are huge lag spikes with latency up going up to 480.

Complain when you get lag spikes for up to 1 minute and latency of between 6500 to 15000ms.

480ms is still very much playable.

Not complaining just giving some feed back on I find is happening. V3G says that the engineering guys are monitoring the thread so they will need feedback.

I have not seen spikes like that for about a week now.

I've experienced some serious spikes last night, up to 20 to 30secs per spike.

Latency was around 600ms to 2000ms, and what made it bad was that it was fluctuating frequently, as in almost every 5 seconds. Was totally terrible and i was almost unable to play.

- What is the problem (lag, latency, ping, disconnects)
I seem to suffer from the lag/lactency issue

Any other questions let me know, ill help in anyway i can

I'm Blown Away!!!!!

Well my dad got the new usb modem from vodacom and with it I am getting an average of 110ms for latency, but wait!!! if you think thats good.....
I was playing call of duty 4 on xbox live when the system picked me as best host!!! so I hosted the game with 12 players and they all had 3/4 bars!! Note that this was at 9pm on saturday 1 november and without the R40 extra for higher access speeds and no external antenna.
I hope my connection will stay so great!!! :D :p ;) :D

Hi Xbox 360 Agent Weed,

Do you know what the make/model is of your datacard? I assume it is an HSUPA capable card, which would explain the better PING times.

- What is the problem (lag, latency, ping, disconnects)
connects fine, then signal drops. lots of lag, high latency (sometimes in the 2000s)

I complained about this over two years ago!

Sad to see the problem is still around. I am currently using MTN on my E220, getting latencies of around 400 latency during peak time. I get these latencies with out fail. The game I play is wow.

Vodacom is only playable very late at night, around 1 am onwards (still get a lot of disconnects though and latencies are around 600ms).

My signal strength with vodacom is around 69 Hz at its best and around 80 at its worst...with MTN it is usually somewhere around 80 - 90 hz (yet MTN gives me best connection/latency).

I went has far has getting an aerial, it actually did nothing to my signals strength. I don't really think it's the signal strength that is the problem. I have tried connecting from a lot of different sites in the city , and I get the same results, so I don't think it is Backhaul on the towers.

I feel the problem is in Vodacom's network. Something happened to it around a 2 years ago, the service just completely degraded.

Before that I was using Vodacom without any problems, latency was pretty good and had no disconnections but like I say something happened around 2 years ago. If I remember correctly it was around December 2006 that the service started degrading, by middle of 2007 it was totally unusable to play wow. (I could be wrong with the dates)

Anyways am sure if you check my post history you will see the correct dates of when it started happening.

One of the main reasons why I actually joined MBB was to ask what was happening to the vodacom signal.

- What is the problem (lag, latency, ping, disconnects)

Irregular lag spikes, some days it runs well and others its terrible, then disconnects happen every now and then, usual pings around 300 but has gone to over 20000 before....

- What game are you playing (is it a FPS, real-time or turn based etc)

Usually just world of warcraft, hosted in america
Browsing and downloading has been slowing down as well.

- Which data card are you using

HSDPA
I am going to get an antennea because it should give better consistancy, but some days its slow even with good signal.

- Is it a new problem or has it always been

It has always been but seems to be getting worse, the consistancy has gone down. it used to run well most the time now its normally running slow.

- Is the problem experienced at all times of the day or only during peak hours

Anytime usualy but worse during office hours

Northcliff/ Berario

- The modem type and firmware rev.

e272 modem, with firmware - 11.304.08.00.00

- The APN you used

I don't use a third party APN

- What is the problem (lag, latency, ping, disconnects)

Irregular lag spikes occasionally, like once in evry 4 games. Once in while these will cause a disconnect but that is rare.

- What game are you playing (is it a FPS, real-time or turn based etc)

Just DoTA

- Which data card are you using

Huawei mobile connect e172 HSDPA usb stick

- Is it a new problem or has it always been

More an occasional annoyance than a regular problematic issue and has always been fairly consistent.

- Is the problem experienced at all times of the day or only during peak hours

Haven't really noticed any trends but i only play at night usually.

- The exact location so we can also check the site covering you

Rylands, Cape Town. My coverage is great according to vodacom maps

- The modem type and firmware rev.

Huawei e172, don't know how to check the firmware (don't feel like plugging it in :-) )

- The APN you used

Standard internet although i have applied for unrestricted

I'd like to get some more, detailed feedback on those of you that see latency issues, especially in games:

We've been trying to understand why some gamers are experiencing problems with lag and high latency:

- What is the problem (lag, latency, ping, disconnects)

lag+latency+ping ... ie .. all the same thing

- What game are you playing (is it a FPS, real-time or turn based etc)

DOTA/Warcraft 3 (the largest online gaming community in SA) Real time strat. WHICH USES EXTREMELY LOW BANDWIDTH!!!!!!!

Hey v3g, DOTA (a mod of Warcraft3) is most likely the most played local game in South Africa. At any one time there are over 900 South Africans in games on the war3 server.

On a dial-up you can play the game cleanly. Using edge the game plays, lags, plays, lags, plays, lags.

To give you an idea of the bandwidth usage.. a game of an hour long will use about 1 mb of bandwidth.. so its minimal.

On edge.. which I was under the impression was quicker than dial-up.. it lags terribly.

It uses a strange port, so I was wondering if its shaped at all.. or if it is beyond EDGE to play DOTA :P

Ta

DOTA games use 3mb i get about latency from 99-180 on a normal day.But today its so terrible im getting 600 latency dont even want to play as i will just ruin games.

Tonights bad this end as well, ingame pings are around 1k and very erratic (random request time outs and spikes). This is happening on the internet apn and checked the unrestricted apn and its even worse.

My info is on page 2 i think

last night i was playing war3 on bnet the europe server and my ping was 140ms but i still got kicked bcoz other people had 20 and 40ms but 140ms is awsome for my vc 3g on a E272 in durban isnt it? i usually get 190-240ms btw.

Get on the local server. www.war3.co.za/forum

140ms is a good international ping to Europe from South Africa. Get on the local server for local pings.

got it working but now noone to play with 600 odd users compared to 200000 in europe is disappointing. i once played for 24hrs straight when i was on leave.

- What is the problem (lag, latency, ping, disconnects)
Lag/Latency - At the best of times my in-game latency is running at about 800ms but most of the time it's running at 900ms+ with allot of spikes but very few disconnects.
When I still had ADSL 384 shaped my latency was running at about 500-600ms

World of Warcraft - EU server

This is the hugest problem. Lagging like crazy. I've never gotten a better lattency than 500ms. Even with the new modem it's still the same.

mods, can you stick this up for a while?
mmmm. No mods that uses a internet connection

I have been playing on the 3G data card for almost 3 years now and It has never been good. One sec it will be below 300ms (happend once or twice) and then jump up to 2000ms. I've never had better ms than 500ms. Where do you guys live that get better than 500?
