Camera Choice??

the 55-200 VR lens sells for about R2.5k itself, so it worth getting now than buying separate later. I've actually been looking for a second hand one and they are really hard to come by. I dont know the reason why bodies sell for more than with a kit lens... Its nothing different, just sells for more for some reason.

the measurements are pretty much like the optical zoom u find in a point and shoot. just brings u closer to the subject.

Ok thanks man :)

Question:

I have seen many bundles for the Nikon D3000 with two lenses (ie: 18 - 55mm VR and 55 - 200 mm VR). What I really want to know is it really necessary for me to buy the bundle and get the extra one now? seeing that im a noob xD. Should I rather buy the body and the 18-55mm VR lens or should I buy the bundle with both of them.

What does the measurements on the lenses really mean?

With the 2 lenses : 7000
Just with one lens: 5600

saving 1400 if i take the single lens

something else i noticed on this site:

http://www.sacamera.co.za/product/149/Nikon.html

the body of the d3000 costs 5700, but directly above that the body AND the lens costs 5600? how does that work??

You're paying R1400 for a lens [you will eventually want] that usually costs R2500.

What do the measurements mean? 18-55 is a mostly wide lens, e.g. for capturing the most of a landscape. 55-200 isn't wide, it's more telephoto/zoom, so it would capture a lot less of a landscape, but you would get closer up to subjects.

bwana has demonstrated the difference between 18 and 200mm, maybe he can add it here. Otherwise Google should help.

Thanks, that helped me understand the lens story :)

Is it safe to buy off sites like sacamera.co.za?
Yes. I've personally bought from SACamera and Orms though the bulk of my lenses have come from B&H in NY.

If you have the money buy the 2 lens kit. The 18-55mm is great for indoors but outdoors you will find quite frequently that it is too short. The only time I wouldn't buy it is if I'd had the intention to buy one of these 18-200mm zoom lenses. That would obviate the need for the 18-55mm lens as well, i.e. you could just buy the body and the zoom lens. Sounds good, but after a while when the excitement has waned the weight and size of the zoom lens will make you think twice whether you want to take it with you on your morning walk, and the answer will be no, it is too much trouble. Of course this will be the time when you see the most amazing things to snap.

sure can.

Thanks for that, so 18 - 55mm gives you more of a wide angle? while 55-200mm gives you telephoto?

I talked to my dad today, didn't give me a definate reply but we are going to makro today, so ill keep my fingers crossed :D:D:D

Anything below ±30mm is regarded as wide. Remember that because consumer/prosumer DSLR bodies have smaller sensors than professional full frame DSLRs (35mm film camera equivalents which are very expensive), the con/prosumer cameras are subject to a "crop factor" where whatever lens you put on is magnified by 1.5 or 1.6 times. See this link - http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/crop-factor.htm . So an 18-55mm lens on a Nikon con/prosumer body will = 27-82.5mm and on a Canon con/prosumer body will = 28.8-88mm. So essentially Nikon con/prosumer bodies see slightly more than Canon. On any full frame body, 18-55 will be 18-55.

Good luck, hope you walk out with a new toy!

Good news guys.. Went out today to makro and took 7k with us.. We were going to buy a d3000 with the twin lens bundle.. My dad told me that we should goto govan mani to have a look aswell. Godd thing we did. We went there and after many demonstrations from the salesman, my dad put a deposit for 7k on the d5000 :D:D

couldnt take the camera because we didnt have enough money at the time (lol)...

When my dad goes past this week he'll pay the rest and collect the d5000..

Thanks to everyone for the fabulous help you guys gave me :D:D:D:D

Congrats! Enjoy it. The vari-angle LCD is pretty cool for shooting from higher/lower positions (although I felt that it sat too close to my nose when I tested the D5000). I assume you needed more cash 'cause you're getting the D5000 twin lens kit?

Did you test any Canons?

If you want to share your work with us, register a Flickr account and link us to your page here.

yea we only had carried 7000 because we were set on buying the d3000, the salesman showed us the d5000 and my dad like it so we put down a deposit because we didn't have enough lol...

Nope, i didn't try out any canons, we were pretty set on getting a nikon :)

Yes, Govan Mani are the best kept secret in Durban - Way cheaper than Makro / Game etc. etc. I bought my Lumix FZ38 there too.
They were even cheaper than the "online folk" too!
