Camera phones to support HD by 2012

There we go, throwing about the magic pixel count again. Full HD (1080p) is 1920x1080, which makes for a total of 2,073,600 pixels. Drop a SI prefix in there, and you get... 2 megapixels. Having 20MP is seriously useless, especially if all you want to do is record HD content.

Not to mention unless there are a few significant advances in optics, the 20MP phone photos will still look crap compared to ones from a 7MP DSLR.

HTC is already selling the 'HTC Touch HD'. Although the resolution is not quite on HD-level, this naming strategy should make the other manufacturers sit up and take note.

Remember how quickly other phones with souped-up touchscreen ability appeared on the market after the Iphone was released?

The only thing that could very well slow down this development, is the current worldwide economic downturn which also means less money going into the R&D departments of the phone makers.

Agree, it's all about optics although lots of pixels count, the high-end, pro DSLR's are 20MP+. But it all about how you use those.

HD playback on mobiles must be much closer than 2012, closer to 2009.
 
Current HSPA technology has a maximum theoretical transmission speed of 7.2Mbps. “HSPA evolution” is expected to emerge later this year, and is expected to increase maximum data speed transmission to 21Mbps.

LTE is said to follow HSPA evolution over the next few years, and will increase theoretical bandwidth speeds to around 100Mbps.

In South Africa we are just getting comfortable with regular 3G technology which is limited to 3.6Mbps, so local LTE implementation will definitely take a bit longer to get here.
Nic, if you follow 3G deployments around the world you'll notice that SA tends to be an early adopter of new technologies, in the top when it came to 3G and HSDPA roll-outs.

Vodacom's HSDPA network is today one of the largest in the world and will, by now, be no 1 or 2 in the Vodafone group, worldwide.

No reason to see the trend changing.

Getting them interconnected via backhaul is, of course, another matter. :rolleyes:

Why would Telkom rush out and install the lines for Vodacom, when they very well know that if Vodacom's speeds are going to improve because of this, it is going to make them look bad for not doing the same for their customers? ;)

Thanks for the clarification there vodacom guy. I didnt want to get to involved in the broadband capabilities of the phone, as the camera was the main focus of the article.

Is it not true that 3G 3.6mbps was introduced internationally in 2005? Then in 2007 the speed was bumped up to 7/14mbps. I understand that the implementation of this tech is quite limited,with only 60 operators offering 7mbps+ globally.

We may be capable of achieving higher 3G speeds, but as you say, if the backbone holding it all together is not in place, then we are gonna be sitting on 3.6 for a while methinks.

I'd rather see a 6mp camera with a decent size sensor and some good glass in front of it but the desired form factor of a phone doesnt permit it - at least it doesn't now. Until it does a cellphone will never replace even the dated point and shoot I currently carry around.

Actually dates can often be confusing. You tend to get a few dates quoted by many different role players.

- The date the technology is shown in the lab.
- The date the product is 'launched' by the vendor. (Some SA network operators also like this one, i.e. 'launch' something that's not in production).
- The date the kit becomes available from the vendor.
- The date the network implements it.
- The date it actually works.

Vodacom typically first build and turn on, then announce.

@Bwana, fully agree. The optics need to get sorted. Is there not a Samsung (I think) phone with optical zoom out?

There might be but imo its not an either/or - you also need a decent size sensor and by that I dont mean a huge number of MP but a sensor with a larger surface area and therefore a lower pixel density.

Which is a $3000 piece of kit with bad glass. With good glass = $4500. It has a CMOS sensor which suffers from issues

To take HD video you need more than a sensor. You need a large sensor, which not only captures native pixels, but also the chroma/luma
of the colour, the ability to correct for lens defects - an HD camera needs excellent lenses, real prosumer HD cameras have good glass,
but that is the limiting factor atm, better glass for a $6000 HD video camera costs another 10-12.000 US. Professional Fujinon lenses
sell for $15K and up for pro HD cameras such as the Panasonic Varicam (which was used to record Planet Earth for the BBC) for ex.
Cell Carl Zeiss is not decent glass. Being named Carl Zeiss does not make it good at all - just a marketing gimmick.

Basically its possible to record crappy HD video on a cell phone now. The quality of current and future cell HD recorders will
be similarly bad to the quality of current cell phone cameras vs seperate Canon or Nikon SLR cameras, don't even want
to mention Hasselblad or Leica which are top end for still cams.

HTC is far from HD. HTC HD's screen is 800by480, Sharp has been making phones with 854by480 for over a year, and they've just released a 1024by480
multi touch screen with ASV (Aqos technology). Sharp phones currently
encode 850by480 video too. Non-Japanese display makers should just give up and buy Sharp or Sony Bravia cell phone screens
(Sony has Bravia LCDs on their domestic cell phone LCD and OLED displays).

I think it's here we'll see hi-def resolutions first, i.e. on the screens. And sooner rather than later. Definitely before 2012.

The problem with proper lenses on the phone is that it goes against the whole idea of making them smaller and thinner.

But there will be a market for a converged device, i.e. a phone with camera capabilities of todays point-and-shoot jobbies with (say) a 5x optical zoom and flash.

(Definition of a converged device: A device that can do many things equally badly.)

$3500 with good glass (24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens).
 
Seriously though, whats the point of hd capable video playback on cellphones?
While hd video cameras would obviously be very cool, being able to play super high definition on a tiny cellphone screen doesn't change the fact that it's .. well .. tiny :p

I used to have a 14" monitor capable of displaying 1600x1200, but I much prefer my now 17" even though it can only do 1280x1024 . :p

So first we need to get bigger screens on cellphones or perhaps some kind of head mounted displays or better yet, built in miniature video projectors - now that would be pretty cool :cool:
