Camera Upgrade

It depends on how enthusiastic you are. :)

I would say significantly enthusiastic :)

I'd like to go for the 7D, even if that means getting the body and then the lens at a later stage.

Or possibly look into buying second hand.

Get the body now and then in 5 years get that Canon 70 - 200 F2.8 II IS :p

Hi Guys,

I'm quite an enthusiast, although never really spent much on gear, I've had my trusty point and shoot canon for a really long time.

Now I'd like to go for something like this:

http://camerahouseonline.com/za/canon-eos-550d-kit-18-200mm-is-replaces-500d.html

But I'm not sure, if I'm spending that much, should I rather not just go for the 7D?

I am just curious to your choice of online retailer... that and I would stay away from superzooms like the 18-200mm. Check out Orms http://www.ormsdirect.co.za/canon-e...8-55mm-f-3-5-5-6-is-ef-s-55-250mm-is-lens-kit for good deals.

Orms has the 7D for R14k ;) http://www.ormsdirect.co.za/canon-eos-7d-slr-digital-camera

The 7D is a good camera, particularly if you're going to find yourself in a situation where you will appreciate the high frame rate (especially once the RAW buffer is more than doubled later this month ;))

Otherwise. . . what about the 60D?

Watch out for these retailers, you have no idea where in the world they are, they just detect you are in RSA and list everything in Rands... If you want to import, B&H photo video in New York would be my only choice. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/646908-REG/Canon_3814B004_EOS_7D_SLR_Digital.html $1499

The Orms deal @ R14000 for a 7D is therefore a SUper deal :D

Can I ask, why avoid the 18-200? bad IQ?

I would like to have 1 main lens.

How about a second hand 7D? I should be getting my rebuilt 7D back soon - new shutter, new case, new lcd, new pcb . . . good as new - only one [-]careful[/-] careless owner. :D

Awesome! I'm very interested, would you be letting it go with a lens?

Trust me - I'm the last person you would ever want to buy a camera from. ;)

R9300 for a 500D kit is a lot of money for an old camera (3 generations old).
There are better camera kits in that price range (650D and 60D).

That was actually for the 550D with Canon 18-200mm lens kit

I bought the 550D kit (with the 2 x 'kit" lenses one of which was the 55mm - 200) about 18 months back. I regret now not having bought a full-frame Canon, and better lenses.
Nothing wrong with the 550D, but if you want to spend less than you would for a full-frame body, then at least get the later 600 or 650D.
But I warn you - you will in the future regret that you did not bite the bullet and get a full-frame model upfront.
The 7D is really great, but if price is an obstacle, the 60D is also very good.

... At 4 times the cost though?

Most people buy roughly what they can afford at the time. If you could have spent R30,000+ 18 months ago, then also not sure why you took a 550

@bwana, if you don't mind, how much did all of that set you back and who did you use to do the repairs?

Thanks

IIRC it was about R5500, it was bundled in with some other repairs on a lens, and it's through CameraTek.
