can anybody stop smoking?

A smoker knows full well what damage the smoking is doing to them. So telling them how bad it is or even showing them means jack ****.

They aren't stupid. They are just willfully ignoring the fact.

It's not your problem. If they want to quit they'll quit.

Smoking is everyone around the smoker's problem, secondhand smoke is only marginally less worst than actual smoke. Smoking is an inherently selfish endeavour. Not like alkies who for the most part only ruin there own health, your smoke effects everyone you come into contact with, negatively.

100%...

I'm in the process of quitting, and to be honest I've found some parts very easy, others not so much.

I enjoy a drink or two in the evening, and that generally is the time I either fail at the quitting part, or its very difficult not to smoke.

Really not being smarty pants and it may all be semantics, but is a drink and a smoke not more of a habit than an addiction? Again, maybe it's just me, but after 34 years of smoking, I somehow found it easier kicking a habit than an addiction and the ultimate stop was a lot easier than I thought it would be wrt withdrawals etc.

If that makes sense? :p

Its not semantics, its almost entirely a habit...

In many ways stopping smoking itself is not hugely difficult, it is changing the habits surrounding that addiction that I've found more difficult.

Tried twice using Champix but my wife continued smoking, resulting in me caving and starting again after 3 months

I smoked cigarettes for 20+ years. On June 14 2017 I had my last smoke and started vaping. It's almost four months now and I'm doing fine. I have the occasional craving but a hit or two on the vape and the cravings are forgotten.

So yes, very possible to stop.

Absolutely possible to stop. I smoked for 10 years and managed to quit using Zyban but fell off the wagon 4 years later. It had never really left me, but finally I kicked it again, twice using Champix. It really helped. I haven't had a cig in 5 years now I think it is, never even think about it anymore. If I smell a cig I want to chuck.

Are you the only person that knows how hard it is to stop smoking?

Its not hard to stop, its hard to not take the next sigarette. its a habit thing, after dinner, oh my god, a smoke after that, or after a coffee, the worst is now that you can't smoke in public, standing in queues, , smoke takes away the pain of dealing with that crap. Now what the hell do you do? Check the k*k on FB?

Anybody can stop smoking. A lot of people don't want to stop.

One morning I just decided to stop. I took one cigarette out of a new packet, smoked it and the rest ended in the dustbin. I have never touched a cigarette again since that day.

My brother's ex wife never stopped smoking during pregnancy. The doctor apparently advised against stopping.
The withdrawal shock the mother suffers affects the baby. So while stopping is not ideal they can reduce the quantity to a minimum. And then give up after the baby is born.

The first time I stopped I was on 50 a day and it was cold turkey. Just stopped and carried an opened packet around in my RAF uniform. It lasted 2 years. Second time I was on 20 a day and also just stopped. No patches or pills. Haven't had a smoke now for over 40 years. So yes it can be done but the person must WANT TO STOP.

An ex colleague stopped when his wife fell pregnant. He smoked the last cigarette in the pack and never went back again. I haven't seen him in a while thus, I don't know if he's back smoking or not

This x1000. /thread.

Haven't had a cigarette for about 2 years now, but i do occasionally indulge in a cigar or 2, but cigarettes, no tx, they are miff.

Anybody can stop.
My dad claimed he never could after a lifetime of smoking(40+ years).
The esophagus cancer made it a breeze, too late of course...

for those who claim smoking affects your health, I know a 90 year old man, smokes like a chimney and still going. Out the door with that BS.

Right. I know a 67 year old man who can't walk and is paralyzed down the one side of his body. . . all from smoking. So keep telling yourself that, I can't imagine many smokers live to 90.

So we ignore the evidence presented by 1000s of peer reviewed studies based on a very small minority? Go check out the antivaxxers and flat earthers while you are at it...

Yeah cos your anecdotal evidence ovrerrides all the peer reviewed medical studies that prove your position on this to be retarded....
