Just saw this brute outside

The rain spiders I've seen don't have abdomens quite that big. They have thinner abdomens about the same length as the spider in that pic.

Maybe she's pregnant?

Crikey... its a Big one!
Tell me about it. Made the mistake of saying to the missus and kids "Hey, look at that . . . "

Thanks for the identification. :)

Looks like a rain spider from here as well. If you compare to the pic on wikipedia as well (very scientific i know), you can see it has the same dashes on the legs and the mouth area looks the same. The large abdomen could very well indicate a preggie spider:P

Found this on the net (the image - second link pasted, taken form the blog post - also has a large abdomen, and one of the commentators thinks it's preggies):

Just think, in a day or so youre going to have millions of them little things running around there....

Ja, the wife have 1 policy towards spiders. A dead one is a good one. It must die! She is horrified about spiders. I can estimate the size by the tone of the eeeek she utters!

Why not keep them, and have less mosquitoes and less crickets making a racket in the spring/summer. I'll take her, and let her distribute her little ones around my garden.

+1... Rain Spider.

Totally harmless, actually nice to have around as they feed on crickets, moths and other annoyances. They are super timid and usually only come after lights out but they are capable of a good jump if needs be, this can be frightening. I saw it once. A little pee came out.

No knowledge of spider types here, but compliments on the quality of your photos! I generally tend to aim my Nokia 5800 in the general direction, use auto focus and press the button. The difference between quality in your pics and mine is more than just the difference in quality between the two cameras, to put the compliment in a mildly confusing way.

freaking hell!!!! that is one ugly mother....... beeep.... I think its a mutant from KKND...
