Can anyone identify this spider?

My only problem with this picture is that I see it was taken at 200mm (if this is the 70-200mm lens that would make the minimum focus distance in the region of 1.3m)

You should have used a Macro lens so that you could get close and personal with it. :-)

btw if it was me I would have used a 800mm lens to take a shot like that.

Well the rain spiders are by no means violent.... however, I've yet to come into close contact with a pregnant female. Had a young male (still rather large at just over 120mm across) on my bedside table once :eek: but it was just casually walking across on 6 legs, using its 2 front legs to feel the area.... was quite interesting :p

Oh yeah.... and you can get the Canon 800mm lens for a mere R110'000.... and then you can attach a 2.0x tc (sure, you lose two stops, but in this case who cares?) and then you have a 1600mm monster to stalk the spider with :D

And this is why I practice air rifle shooting. I ever see one, I'll shoot it, won't risk getting close enough.. Last resort using a can of Doom like a flame thrower. That technique works well on black widows..

Turns out it's the Argiope australis - aka Common Banded Argiope Spider.
 
I think the crop is too tight, Bwana ... White balance seems to be a smidgen off. Aside from that, exposure is pretty decent and all in all I'd give it a 7/10

I trimmed a bit off the sides but there's no magnification.

Here's another shot I just took, edited on my iPad so no EXIF stamp but it was with a 300mm f/2.8 and a 1.4x tc.

Any thoughts on this nest? I think I saw a rain spider perched on it last night but it was too dark to be 100% certain

I'm sure the mother will be back tonight so I'll go armed with a flash and see what I come up with.

I'm also wondering if I can relocate it without causing any harm. It's freaking out the missus and the kids and it's also only a matter of time before the dog notices it.

Lol. Nope, suburbs of PE. :)

I usually take the photos for the kids and their teachers who use them for various projects and lessons so I keep my eyes open for the strange creepy-crawlies. :)
