Can anyone identify this spider?

Definately a rainspider, I have many (probably around 100 or more) in my garden and have seen them in many different sizes, some get very big, much bigger than in the photo.

I'll never get used to them, don't enjoy gardening that much anymore, I don't kill them and get very upset when they come indoors, yes I'm frightened of them, but I remove them with a butterfly net.
 
Yeah, agreeing with the above consults :P

We've had tons of these as well. The largest of which was the size of my hand.... :eek:

Totally harmless, actually nice to have around as they feed on crickets, moths and other annoyances. They are super timid and usually only come after lights out but they are capable of a good jump if needs be, this can be frightening. I saw it once. A little pee came out.

I actually have cold shivers at this moment, remembering.

I saw one of those big nests they build out of leaves on the wall and went to take a closer look. What I didn't realize is that mummy was waiting and watching my approach and when I got close she leaped out, fanned her front legs and hissed at me.

I feel sick looking at those pictures. Just for the record, I refuse any and all potential braai invitations at your place. :p
 
I'm pretty sure its a rain spider too. I've seen a couple around my house with those huge abdomens. to me bigger abdomen in ratio to head = scarier.. regardless of size. your photo is scary my friend.

That looks like something I had to kill in Half-Life once. Took a few hours and plenty of firepower.
Aim for the sac.
 
I was playing with one two weekends ago, their legs feel like little needles as they run along your skin.

Hahahah, I had a Prophecy Forum meet at my place a few months ago, before the forumites arrived, I scanned the braai area - you know - turned the chairs upside down, crawled under the table, and found nothing, however there was one big daddy that crept into a crevice of a heavy wooden bench - I kept mum and hoped it wouldn't surface, it didn't, but one of the forumites - a known for extreme spider phobia, chose that exact spot to park off for the evening, I kept quiet, didn't mention a thing, but kept on the lookout for in case. kekeke

NOOOOOOOOOO - don't kill it!

it's absolutely harmless. try to move it further from the house if necessary, but DON'T kill it - pse!

I agree, killing them is a horrid thing to do. Not totally harmless though, I believe their bite can be fairly painful, due to the massive size of their chomping apparatus.

Harmless, but the bite itches like hell hahaha, one bit me on the top of my foot once, it itched incredibly for about 5 days. (made a tiny mark, did not really swell much (apart from me scratching my foot and rubbing it against walls, posts, curtains, furniture :D ) eventually I put some medical cream on to subdue the itching and walked around with a glass of ice cubes, which I rubbed over it )
