So I took advantage of the R189/2Gb special, bought 4Gb. I have good 3G coverage where I live (4 of 5 bars). However, the connection is uber slow - it takes two hours to download a digital copy of the Sunday Times (about 150Mb), the same download takes 10/15 minutes on a Vodacom connection (same device everything). I logged a call with their data centre but MTN have not come back to me even though they claim a turn around time of 24 hours (that expired on Friday evening).

My Vodacom 2Gb lasts about 20 days at most but with MTN it is going to be 6 months before I can do half that at these speeds. So seeing as the data will expire at the end of the month and I still have another 2Gb voucher unused, can I raise enough hell to get a refund? You can't even browse, the speeds are so bad.

Probably won't be able to get a refund tho. As the speeds are dependent on a hundred different things according to their terms and conditions. But if its that bad I wouldn't suggest trying MTN again.

I definitely have no intention of using them for data ever again. I do have an MTN voice contract which I will port away later in a month or two because of this. Their call centre staff are useless, as soon as you tell them you are not using MTN's fastlink or their software they break, can't compute. They keep telling me to select the 3G only connection even as I explain that I swap the MTN SIM Vodacom's on the same settings and with a download manager Vodacom gives me up to 600KB/s with multiple threads.

Yes the signal is also pathetic in my area in the N/Cape. It happens most of the time after 19h00 and over weekends.
I'm also on this R189/2Gb PPaid promo. Sometimes even during the day i connect, disconnect & re-connect up to 5-6 times to get throughput.
BTW i'm only here for this promo, so MTN won't see me soon again.

You should try this.
