Can the War on Terror Be Won?

Stating facts is not just 'defending America'

Still waiting for proof. This is about the 3rd or 4th time this claim has been made and still no proof. Still no explanation for anti American websites, protests, inviduals in the U.S shouting their mouths off. C'mon people repeating it over and over doesn't make it a fact.

Some as above. Still waiting for proof and explanations for "shock troops', 'rathergate' and 101 other admited media lies.

What poll was what that anyway?

What does that make us  As they're the sole super power. Eish :o

Nobody is claiming they are

erm... I don't understand? What do you mean, what type of proof do you expect? I mean it is pretty clear that the Patriot Act rapes US citizen liberties... or do you need some fact or proof for my proof?

I never said you claim them to Angels, but they certainly claim to be Angels themselves. "God Bless America" comes to mind.

Proof? You Scream "Prooof" but yet you yourself make absolutely no sense. Be clear about your point of view for a change. I beg you to open up that mystery and clarify what the great Alan85 thinks about the situation with America?

Here is some more recent evidence of camps.

But just because the president is different doesn't mean the same people aren't telling him what to do. I don't think for a minute that george bush has any say in the running of the country. the man is an imbecile. It's almost like a token role at the moment, like the queen of england.

- check out some of alex joneses documentaries like 'terrorstorm' and '911 road to terror' for for more convincing info. Just check it out you don't have to believe it but is does pose some questions.

Alex Jones [In thick Alex Jones Narrator voice] is awesome.
Zeitgeist is the best though.

Mix Some Dawkins with some Zeitgeist, and a hint of Alex Jones Narrator Voice, you have a anti-american soldier on your hands.

Ah yes, Alex Jones that idiot who comments on stuff for which he has no qualification. He is a radio host, nothing more!

Saying that...History Channel showed a 9/11 Documentary called "Fact or Fiction" and their synopsis was:

“Each conspiracy argument is countered by a variety of experts in the fields of engineering, intelligence and the military. The program also delves into the anatomy of such conspiracies and how they grow on the Internet.”

Convenient to discredit the messager rather than analyzing the message... this is an old tactic used by people who can't entirely refute an argument ;)

The IRA started circa 1970 - Not USA
ETA Spain have been at it for years - Not USA
ANC Now legal - Not USA
PLO - Not USA

The pre-9/11 list goes on and on... Do you read papers of watch news??

* sigh *

denial is the first stage. be real and don't defend the crap that america perpetrates. there's no way in hell you can deny that terrorism skyrocketed since the "WAR ON TERRORISM". what a load of crocsh1t.

The War Against "Terror"....wow if someone could tell me who the hell these terrorists are and what they do to piss the US off so much that they deserve being killed without a trail or a day in court!

How's that for asking and answering all in one sentence (no pun intended);).

None of the "conspiracy theory" propaganda (typically originating in the middle east) will get the west to drop their guard.

it's like blaming Tony Blair for terrorism

Now what conspiracy theory can we come up with in this case?

Tony Blair isn't to blame for terrorism - Ten years ago, in November 1997, 50 Swiss tourists rose early to visit the Valley of the Kings across the Nile from Luxor in Egypt. Suddenly from the hills came a group of Islamists. They shot, disembowelled and decapitated the tourists.

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,2209123,00.html

It was just one of the many forerunners of 9/11 in 2001 in New York, 7/7 in 2005 in London or 11/M as the Spanish call the train bombings in Madrid in 2004. Today, as the killing in the name of extremist political Islamist ideology increases in tempo and intelligence agencies struggle to disarm those promised a passage to heaven if they blow themselves and others up, the earlier wave of militant Islamist killing can be overlooked.

One of the constant lies of the current debate over terrorism is that it is all the fault of George Bush and Tony Blair. The best-known Swiss in Britain today is Tariq Ramadan, the most interesting of Europe's political Islamists. He wrote recently that the 'invasion of Iraq, blind support for the insane policies of George Bush, British silence on the oppression of the Palestinians have a direct bearing on the deep discontent shared by many Muslims towards the West in general, and towards Britain in particular'.

Ramadan's views are standard tropes for many on the liberal-left in Europe. Not just the left. The new centre-right government in Poland wants to leave Iraq and David Cameron said that Britain should not drop the idea of intervention. But as the families of those killed a decade ago remember those dreadful murders on the Nile, can Bush and Blair be blamed as the inspirers of the killing of Swiss tourists? Or what in 1995 inspired the Paris Metro bombing which killed eight? The 1995 Islamist campaign of violence in France was financed from London by the Algerian Islamist fundamentalist Rachid Ramda. British ministers, lawyers and judges protected Ramda from French justice for a full decade. Finally in 2005, Ramda was sent back to face the justice he was long protected from. He has just been sentenced to life.

Then comes the argument that Osama bin Laden was, as London's mayor, Ken Livingstone, puts it 'a simple businessman until he met the CIA' which encouraged him to launch jihad in Afghanistan against the dying Soviet empire. But this does not explain why Islamists killed, in cold blood, Anwar Sadat, the courageous Egyptian president who went to the Knesset to talk peace with Israel long before Blair was in Parliament and before the Soviets arrived in Kabul.

So if we follow history's thread back we have to leave the contemporisation of the debate. Something deeper is going on. To discuss this in religious terms is repugnant for many. But history is full of faiths sanctioning political murders to advance a cause.

The violence of faith takes many forms. A university report has just been published on the material available in British mosques, Muslim schools and bookshops. It reveals a violent brew of anti-semitism, misogyny and homophobia which inculcates a loathing for fellow citizens who do not conform to the rules of Islamist ideologues.

The report scrupulously quotes extracts from books and pamphlets widely available in mosque bookshops. The response of the Muslim Council of Britain was to attack the research. Instead of calling on mosques to empty themselves of such hate material, the MCB called for the report to be ignored. This arrogant dismissal does no service to Muslims.

Some are trying to move forward. As a young militant, Tariq Ramadan made statements on Jews, gays and women which do not read well today. But at a recent debate he supported Israel's right to exist. Citing the example of Turkey's ruling Law and Development party which has its roots in political Islam, Ramadan held up the tantalising prospect of Islamist politics leaving behind its support for words and acts that have caused so much damage to Muslims over the past century.

It is not too late. Ramadan's language is elusive, debating with him is like trying to pick up mercury with a fork. At an Oxford University seminar he is the acceptable face of Islamism. But until the hate material is removed from sale and democratically accountable Muslim leaders emerge to contest the theologians of terrorism, anti-semitism, misogyny and homophobia in Riyadh, Cairo, Qatar and Tehran, the birth of democratic European Islamist politics is unlikely.

Even if it has that doesn't mean it was caused by the war on terrorism.

Germany train bomb trial begins

The trial has begun in Germany of one of the two main suspects accused of attempting to bomb two regional commuter trains in July last year.
Youssef Mohammed al-Hajdib, 22, accused of attempted murder, was found guilty in absentia in his native Lebanon just before the start of the trial.

He got a life sentence, while second suspect Jihad Hamad - who had fled back to Lebanon - was jailed for 12 years.

The bombs did not go off, but could have caused carnage, prosecutors say.

The two men planned the attacks after becoming incensed by caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in European newspapers, prosecutors added.

Construction flaw

At the start of Hajdib's trial in Dusseldorf, German prosecutors said the pair had planted identical suitcases containing propane gas and crude detonators on two trains in Cologne.

The men were detained after police released CCTV footage
Prosecutors accused Hajdib of planning the attacks with Hamad in an attempt to "kill an undetermined number of people".

"A detonation would have in both cases led to a significant wave of pressure; lighter fluid in the 'bomb trolleys' could have set off a fireball," AFP news agency quoted the charge sheet as saying.

A lawyer for Hajdib said his client had deliberately designed the devices so they would not explode, adding that he was "not a dangerous terrorist".

"Perhaps they just wanted to send a message," said Bernd Rosenkranz, quoted by AFP.

Hajdib was arrested at the main rail station in the Baltic Sea port city of Kiel in August 2006 after police made closed circuit TV footage of the two suspects public.

A note written in Arabic, a telephone number in Lebanon and packets of starch with labels in Arabic and English were found alongside the devices.

The identical suitcase bombs were fitted with timers set to go off 10 minutes before the trains arrived in Dortmund and Koblenz respectively.

Police said they failed to detonate because of a construction flaw.

Hamad, who fled to Lebanon and gave himself up to police last year, admitted helping to plant the bombs.

Three other men on trial in the Lebanese capital Beirut were acquitted.

Bwahahahaha sure

Al Qaeda's Travel Agent

The United States is at last making significant progress against al Qaeda in Iraq—but the road to victory now requires cutting off al Qaeda's road to Iraq through Damascus.

Thanks to Gen. David Petraeus's new counterinsurgency strategy in Iraq, and the strength and skill of the American soldiers fighting there, al Qaeda in Iraq is now being routed from its former strongholds in Anbar and Diyala provinces. Many of Iraq's Sunni Arabs, meanwhile, are uniting with us against al Qaeda, alienated by the barbarism and brutality of their erstwhile allies.

As Gen. Petraeus recently said of al Qaeda in Iraq: "We have them off plan."

But defeating al Qaeda in Iraq requires not only that we continue pressing the offensive against its leadership and infrastructure inside the country. We must also aggressively target its links to "global" al Qaeda and close off the routes its foreign fighters are using to get into Iraq.

Recently declassified American intelligence reveals just how much al Qaeda in Iraq is dependent for its survival on the support it receives from the broader, global al Qaeda network, and how most of that support flows into Iraq through one country—Syria. Al Qaeda in Iraq is sustained by a transnational network of facilitators and human smugglers, who replenish its supply of suicide bombers—approximately 60 to 80 Islamist extremists, recruited every month from across the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, and sent to meet their al Qaeda handlers in Syria, from where they are taken to Iraq to blow themselves up to kill countless others.

Although small in number, these foreign fighters are a vital strategic asset to al Qaeda in Iraq, providing it with the essential human ammunition it needs to conduct high-visibility, mass-casualty suicide bombings, such as we saw last week in northern Iraq. In fact, the U.S. military estimates that between 80% and 90% of suicide attacks in Iraq are perpetrated by foreign fighters, making them the deadliest weapon in al Qaeda's war arsenal. Without them, al Qaeda in Iraq would be critically, perhaps even fatally, weakened.

That is why we now must focus on disrupting this flow of suicide bombers—and that means focusing on Syria, through which up to 80% of the Iraq-bound extremists transit. Indeed, even terrorists from countries that directly border Iraq travel by land via Syria to Iraq, instead of directly from their home countries, because of the permissive environment for terrorism that the Syrian government has fostered. Syria refuses to tighten its visa regime for individuals transiting its territory.

Coalition forces have spent considerable time and energy trying to tighten Syria's land border with Iraq against terrorist infiltration. But given the length and topography of that border, the success of these efforts is likely to remain uneven at best, particularly without the support of the Damascus regime.

Theres a war on Terror?
