Can you pass matric maths?

I'm sure if I did a quick crash course, the knowledge would resurface in my brain again.

Last time I did matric maths, was in matric ... 20 years ago.
 
If it was in afrikaans I might understand what they are expecting but in english I have no idea what they are asking.
 
Questions 1 to 5 are super easy, so I'll try Q6. The answer can be guessed in one second though if you look at the answers provided - not very good work by the examiner.

- FO length is given
- EO length is given
- EF length can be calculated with trig
- FEO angle can be calculated with trig
- Then you've got the angle at E and AED
- Now all other angles can be worked out

That is where my memory of high school trig and geometry fails me. Obviously the goal is to work out the length of FM or MO to get M, whereupon you have two coordinates and are basically done.

Any help would be appreciated.

Q6 is rather simple.


Considering you have a straight line.

We know that at point b (slightly above M) the co-ordinates are 1:5

Therefore based on the answers given - we can deduce the only possible answer is y = 0.5x + 4.5. {5 = 0.5*1 + 4.5}

None of the other answers will work.
 
The kids should pass this. As for the older folk, you are forgiven :p
 
Thanks. Feeling my age. I got a C on HG Maths over 20 years ago! But I got 24/44 so don't think I did too badly since I don't remember the theories and stuff. LOL.
 
Question 5 is ambiguous - what does the colour of the car have to do with the calculation?
 
I'm sure I'll pass it after receiving some tutoring and practice. If I had to write it now, I'll fail miserably.
 
Great, explain question 5 and the silliness of the meaning of having 3 silver cars? because 7! isn't an answer.

The five cars can be parker in a 5 X 4 X 3 X 2 X 1 ways. The three silver cars can be parked in 3 X 2 X 1 ways. So there are (3X2X1)(5X4X3X2X1) = 720 ways to park the car.

Nowhere does it say that the silver cars have to be adjacent to each other?
 
"Real" mathematics is done to teach you the ability to reason and to develop the neural pathways to solve complex problems.

It has nothing to do with the contents

Then why dont they have chess or soduko or other similar brainiac games as a subject at school?

Truth is, those each will only teach you one facet of thinking. For example, none of the above will teach you about "Proof", amongst other things

Show me anybody who can score a C in mathematics HG (at least that's what we knew it as in 1998 when I was in matric) and I'll show you someone who's prolific in chess, great with Sudoku and can solve a Rubik's cube in sub 30 seconds

I got a B (76%) For HG maths in matric.

I don't care for Sudoku, chess or Rubik's cubes.

High school and varsity maths was an exercise in A) understanding what was being asked and B) doing a whole lot of examples to learn all the tricky ways in which the questions can be asked.
 
I had 99% in matric maths and I'm did engineering maths up until my 3rd year. I can't remember a thing from these questions so I would probably fail :D
